On Green Dolphin Street
Chick Corea (Akoustic Band) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened
A man, a maid, a kiss, and then goodbye
Romance was the theme
And we were the players
I never think of this without a sigh

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
I could kiss the ground on Green Dolphin Street

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart

When I recall the love I found on
On Green Dolphin Street

Overall Meaning

Chick Corea's classic tune "On Green Dolphin Street" tells the story of a short but intense romantic encounter between two people, full of longing and regret. The song starts with the singer thinking back to the past, saying that what happened seems like a dream but he knows it was real. He sets the scene by describing how he met a woman, they fell in love and had a kiss, but then they had to say goodbye. The singer describes how he and the woman were both players in this brief but powerful romance.

The second half of the song is a reminiscence of the setting where the romantic encounter took place. Green Dolphin Street is a reference to a famous jazz club in Chicago, which was a popular spot for musicians and other artistic types in the 1950s and 60s. The singer describes how Green Dolphin Street was the perfect place for them to fall in love, where they spent unforgettable nights together. Even though they are apart now, the memory of their love lives on in his heart whenever he recalls the time they spent together on Green Dolphin Street.

Overall, the song captures the bittersweet nature of love, and how sometimes even brief and intense encounters can stay with us for a lifetime. The lyrics are full of wistful nostalgia and a sense of loss, but also celebrate the power of love to connect us to a time, a place, and another person in a way that can endure long after the relationship has ended.

A fantastic performance. RIP Chick, you will be missed. Please note that On Green Dolphin Street was composed by Kaper and Washington in 1947, not by Miles Davis!

NewAgain

Um ok. But jazz is diff. U credit the song to the performers, if they jammed. Kinda like folk music. U don’t know who wrote what, but you know who did the versions u like.

A. "Christopher" Johnson

True, Miles just made it way hotter !!!

Pedro Beroes

Rest in peace Chick.

Speechless, amazing piano tone.
The intonation on the Bass is amazing .
The way Weckle's toms are mic'd is an interesting stereo split

Mind-blowing blowing over Green Dolphin Street changes. Chick must have listened to a lot of McCoy Tyner the night before. Chick doesn't like to play the melody much. But that's ok, because the majority of his listeners are pro musicians or at least well educated listeners. Incredible music, and fantastic musicians. Bravo!
