Chinchilla continues the amusing tradition of oddly-named German power metal bands (imagine trying to promote a tour consisting of Chinchilla, Squealer, and Custard in America). Their early history is a bit murky — they formed in 1988 and by 1990 had recorded an album, No Mercy, of which not a lot is known (it’s not even listed on the official site’s discography), and after guitarist Udo Gerstenmeyer left the band, they folded soon afterwards. Four years later, Gerstenmeyer recruited a completely different lineup and recorded what initially was a demo, but turned into the Who Is Who EP. More lineup changes ensued, and finally the band had some stable footing, releasing Horrorscope in 1998 before signing with Metal Blade in 2000. The 2000 release, Madness, is the album reviewed here. Not surprisingly, Chinchilla’s style is rooted in Euro power metal 80’s-style. They don’t have the galloping pace of a Gamma Ray, but are more of a mid-paced melodic power metal band, maybe not too far removed from Iron Savior or Sinner. Overall, Madness is a competent album. It’s not going to set the world alight nor impress anyone with originality, but the staples of the genre (singalong choruses, simple but nicely constructed riffs, a power ballad or two, and so forth) are here for the listening, with the interesting cover choice of Kiss’ “I Stole Your Love” (staying relatively faithful to the original) thrown in for good measure.
After two releases in 2000 and 2002 with the same members, the the lineup change bug has bitten again, with three new members joining the band in 2002, eventually releasing Madtropolis a year later. They still aren’t interested in innovation (writing a song called “Heavy Metal” in 2003 seems a bit behind the times, particularly given its Manowar-ish anthemic chorus), but no doubt European audiences will like this.

With a big black car full of self esteem
You're a character from a land
Where the cold black hearts make the ladies scream
Well I'm sick of it man
But there's just one more thing before I leave
You know you're not my kinda man
But I'm oh, so tempted by bad for me
Why you trying?
Hit me with your essay
I'll say ha ha ha ha
Still I wanna feed the hunger
Wait a second, humor me
Only wanna take you home and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
I just wanne be alone and fuck you
Fuck you
All night
Only wanna take you home and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
Only wanna be alone and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
There's a feeling in the smoke
From the fire below, but that's all I see
And now the flame is just a glow
And it comes and it goes with a gentle weep
We both put in the hours
It seems such a shame not to rest in peace
But now it's over
Call it closure
Wait a second, humor me
Only wanna take you home and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
I just wanne be alone and fuck you
Fuck you
All night
Only wanna take you home and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
Only wanna be alone and fuck you
Fuck you
One time
Why you tryna play games?
What you tryna do?
I'm not tryna play games
But am I tempting you?
I... I...
I'm only human my instincts are primal
Don't lie, lie
Must sound familiar 'cause I'm only doing what
I said I'd do
Sorry if I tempted you
Hey...
Why you tryna play games?
What you tryna do?
Why you tryna play games?
What you tryna do?
Why you tryna play games?
What you tryna do?
I'm not tryna play games
But am I tempting you?
Touch you, touch you, one time
Touch you, touch you, all night
Touch you, touch you, one time
Touch you, (you can touch me if) touch you, (I can touch you) all night
In the song "One Time" by Chinchilla, the lyrics paint a picture of a person who is attracted to someone who is not their usual type. The subject of the song is described as an "imaginary man" with a big ego, symbolized by the big black car full of self-esteem. This person comes from a place where people have cold and uncaring hearts, but their presence still manages to captivate and make the ladies scream.
Despite recognizing that this person is not their ideal match, the singer is tempted by the allure of someone who is bad for them. They question why this person is lying and trying to deceive them, and even though they find it amusing, there is a hunger within them that desires a connection with this person. The chorus emphasizes this desire, expressing a longing to be alone with them for one intimate encounter.
Moving forward, the song delves into the paradoxical nature of this attraction. The lyrics mention a feeling in the smoke from the fire below, representing the intense passion between the two. However, the flame is now fading, coming and going with a sense of melancholy. Despite both parties putting in effort and time, it seems that it is time to let go and find closure.
As the song progresses, there is a questioning of motives and games being played. The singer acknowledges their own primal instincts and humanity, suggesting that they were only doing what they had previously mentioned or promised. They apologize for any temptation caused, indicating a sense of awareness and regret.
The final chorus reinforces the desire to touch and be intimate with this person, repeating the phrase "Touch you, touch you, one time / Touch you, touch you, all night." This repetition emphasizes the intense desire and longing to fulfill this physical connection.
Overall, "One Time" explores the complexities of attraction, temptation, and the struggle between what one wants and what is ultimately best for them. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of conflicting emotions and desires, making the song a reflection on the intricate aspects of human relationships.
