O Redeemer divine, our sole hope of salvation,
Eternal Light of the earth and the sky,
We kneel in adoration.
O Savior, return on us Thy loving eye!

Send down on us the fire of Thy grace all-consuming,
Whose wondrous might dispersed the powers of hell.
And rouse our slumbering souls with radiance all-illumining,
that they may waken Thy mercy to tell!

O Christ, bestow Thy blessing on us, we implore Thee,
Who here are gathered on penitent knee,
Accept the hymns we chant to Thine eternal glory,
and these Thy gifts we return unto Thee!

Répands sur nous le feu de ta grâce puissante;
Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de ta voix;

Pour te bénir maintenant rassemblé;

The original Latin text:

Consors paterni luminis,
Lux ipse lucis et dies,
Noctem canendo rumpimus:
Assiste postulantibus.

Aufer tenebras mentium,
Fuga catervas dæmonum,
Expelle somnolentiam
Ne pigritantes obruat.

Sic, Christe, nobis omnibus
Indulgeas credentibus,
Ut prosit exorantibus
Quod præcinentes psallimus.

Sit, Christe, rex piissime,
Tibi Patrique gloria
Cum Spiritu Paraclito
In sempiterna sæcula.
Amen.

The last verse (or doxology) has a variant:
Praesta, Pater Piissime,
Patrique, compar Unice,
Cum Spiritu Paraclito
Regnans per omne saeculum.
Amen.

English translation:

Word of God, one with the Most High,
in Whom alone we have our hope,
Eternal Day of heaven and earth,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!

Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace,
That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice;
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of your laws!

O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people
Now gathered here to praise you;
Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory;
May they go forth filled with your gifts.

German translation:

Wort Gottes, eins mit dem Allerhöchsten,
in dem allein wir unsere Hoffnung haben,
Ewiges Licht des Himmels und der Erde,
Wir brechen das Schweigen der ruhigen Nacht;

So dass die Hölle beim Klang deiner Stimme entflieht;

Die jetzt hier versammelt sind um dich zu preisen;
Empfange ihre Hymnen, die zu deinem unsterblichen Ruhm dargebracht werden;

P.S.:
The French, English and German translations are done as accurate as possible but the text is very different from the Latin original.

I heard that song at my grand mother's funerals... and at that very moment, I stopped crying... it was like if I understood that my grand ma was in a better world and that i didn't had to worry about her... I just smiled and felt so good for those 5 minutes :)

Amazing comment to read

I have always loved this piece. I sang parts as a lullaby to my son when he was little and it lulled him to sleep even on his crankiest nights. Now in his 30's he still reminds me that it is " like a trip to heaven" when ever he hears it.

Truly, there is something so beautiful about the combination of this text with the sublime music of Faure that produces tears! I find myself at it's mercy, as well.

Had the immense pleasure of performing this song with a high school choir at many of France's most sacred cathedrals - Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur and Mont. St. Michel - 1987

@notaire2

I always cannot hear this devine song without tears.

@apoorvavadi

Love this song - learned this while I was in a Choir group at NYU. I find myself enjoying this song even today 8-9 years later. What a calming melody...

@remyworldpeace

Doubtlessly the most transcendentally beautiful piece of music set to French words

@JCSol

One of the most beautiful songs dedicated to our Lord
