Cagle made his debut on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts with the single My Love Goes On And On, the first single from his debut album Play It Loud. The album, which was certified gold in the United States, also produced the Top 10 hit Laredo and I Breathe In, I Breathe Out, his first and only Number One hit.
Play It Loud was followed in 2002 by Chris Cagle, released on Capitol Records. Also a gold album in the U.S., it produced the Top 5 hits What a Beautiful Day and Chicks Dig It. Anywhere but Here, his third compilation, followed in 2005 and produced the #12-peaking Miss Me Baby. A fourth studio album, titled My Life's Been a Country Song, was released in 2008, and its lead-off single, What Kinda Gone, peaked at #3 on the country music charts in early 2008.
The Got My Country On Songfacts reports that a fifth studio album, titled Back in the Saddle, will be released May 22, 2012, and its lead-off single, Got My Country On, was dropped on August 29, 2011.

Was it just the wind, or was she mad again? (aww hell)
She's gettin' in her car. I hollar "Baby, is there something wrong?"
Thought I heard her say something sounding like "I'm gone".
But these days gone can mean so many things.
There's gone for good, and there's good and gone
And there's gone with the long before it
Well, there's gone for the day and gone for the night
And gone for the rest of your dod' gone life.
Is it a whiskey night, or just a couple beers?
I mean what kinda' gone are we talkin' 'bout here?
Well, it's gettin' dark out, she ain't back yet
Ain't called home, turned off the phone. (aww man)
Ha, this might not be good. I woulda' stopped her when she went to leave
But it didn't call 'cause I didn't really think what I'm thinkin' now.
I'm still not sure what gone is all about.
There's gone for good, and there's good and gone
And there's gone with the long before it
I wish she'd been just a little more clear.
Well, there's gone for the day and gone for the night
And gone for the rest of your dod' gone life.
Is it a whiskey night, or just a couple beers?
I mean what kinda' gone are we talkin' 'bout here?
Is it the kinda' gone where she's at her moms?
Coolin' down, she'll come around
Or the kind that says you had your chance
And she ain't comin' back.
What kinda' gone are we talkin' 'bout,
What kinda' gone are we talkin' 'bout here?
What kinda' gone.
The song "What Kinda Gone" by Chris Cagle portrays the confusion and anxiety that comes with a relationship that is going through a rough patch. The singer of the song describes the moment when his partner storms out of the house, leaving him unsure of what kind of "gone" she means. As he waits for her and contemplates what went wrong, he realizes that there are many different forms of "gone," some temporary and others permanent. He wonders if she's just blowing off steam or if this is the final straw that will end the relationship for good.
The song's lyrics capture the complexity of modern relationships and the difficulties that couples face when they're struggling to communicate effectively. The singer's uncertainty about what his partner means by "gone" reflects the often-confusing nature of communication in the digital age, where people can disappear or cut off contact without warning. The lyrics are also relatable because they depict the fear of abandonment that many people experience when their relationships are on the rocks.
Overall, the song emphasizes the importance of clarity and communication in relationships. By wondering what kind of "gone" his partner means, the singer of the song highlights the need for clear and honest communication in relationships, especially during difficult times. The song encourages listeners to speak openly with their partners and work through their issues together, rather than allowing miscommunication and misunderstandings to drive them apart.
