Now all we need is someone to do the buying
My buddy Lendell, he ain't never got no money
But he drinks up most the beer everytime
By nine o'clock got a half case between us
Pull into the quick pick Lendell had to have some smoke
There sit Susie in Billy Cotts camaro
Their 'bout to go toe to toe
Here comes a cop car
Lendell says the cemetery bill
Well see how bad you are
Another Friday night in this oil patch town
Keep the beers outta sight when the state troopers come around
And we ain't lookin' for trouble wouldn't mind a fight
What else you gonna do it's just another Friday night
Billy says, "Let's get it on" and Lendell just slugs him
That's 'bout all the fightin' that got done
Sheriff pulls up he says "What you hoodlums doing?"
"Nothing much junior just tryin' to have some fun"
He's acting tough and taking names
And shuttin' us down
But at least we got something to talk about
When Monday rolls around
Another Friday night in this oil patch town
Keep the beers outta sight when the state troopers come around
Now we ain't lookin' for trouble wouldn't mind a fight
What else you gonna do it's just another Friday night
Friday night in this oil patch town
The song "Oil Patch Town" by Chris Knight is a classic country story about spending a Friday night in a small, working-class town with little prospects for entertainment or excitement. The song beautifully describes the town's bleak atmosphere and how the singer and his friends spend their nights looking for ways to let off steam. The song starts with the singer announcing he has six dollars, just enough to buy some beer. He then laments that he always has to lend money to his friend Lendell, who drinks most of the beer. By nine o'clock, they already have a half-case between them and they decide to stop at a Quick Pick for cigarettes. There, they run into Susie, who is sitting in Billy Cotts' Camaro. Lendell flirts with Susie, and Billy gets jealous, threatening to break Lendell's neck. Just then, a cop car pulls up, and Lendell tells Billy to drop it, and they all go their separate ways.
The singer and his friends are not looking for trouble but wouldn't mind a fight. They know the state troopers patrol the area and keep the beers out of sight when they're around. The chorus repeats, "Another Friday night in this oil patch town," as if it's a mantra of sorts.
The song represents a quintessential small-town experience where the options for entertainment are limited to drinking beer, smoking cigarettes, and getting into fights. The lyrics portray beautifully the bleakness of small-town living, where the monotony of life is broken by small incidents, like the singer and his friends' encounter with Susie and Billy.
