Chris Smithers song "Love you like a man" from Smithers first album has been famously covered by Bonnie Raitt who has made it a signature song of hers under the title "Love me like a man" (published on her second Album "Give it up")- she has openly expressed admiration for Chris Smithers songwriting and guitarplaying. Later Raitt's version of the song has been covered by The Dixie Chicks and Diana Krall.
The protagonist of Linda Barnes's series of "Carlotta Carlyle" mysteries is a fan of Smither's music and several of her books mention it.

In the empty way he touched me, where I hardly feel
In the empty hole inside me, the nothing that'll ride me
Down into my grave, it does not heal
Nothing is as something, it'll suck you dry
As the whisper you can hardly hear that tells you why.
They told me "You ain't got no problems, you're self-deceived"
It was then that I decided my life was being guided
By a second-rate dependence on first-class thieves
They told me I was breaking through, I was breaking down
By the time I learned the difference they had long left town.
You know that they ain't so malicious, they ain't mean
They're just vaguely well-intentioned with no love I've seen
And it's the emptiness that kills you, cold comfort that'll fill you
With a sense of dread that maybe things are worse than they seem
They don't tell you nothing you don't already know
They just keep holding out the promise but they don't let go
You know they don't let go.
Well, it was hard luck and trouble, bad times too
I know I had 'em coming, but I got through
It was advice that you gave me in a dream that saved me
You said "Get a new life contract that spells out your dues."
Took good will to find it, a clear conscience to sign it
Now I dream about the good times and it all comes true.
The lyrics of Chris Smither's "The Devil's Real" speak to the reality of personal struggles and the individuals who perpetuate them. The singer acknowledges that the devil is not a legend or myth, but a real and tangible force. This force is seen in the emptiness, the hole inside that cannot be filled or healed. It is also present in the nothingness that rides the singer down to their grave. The devil is something that sucks the life out of a person, whispering in a voice so quiet it's almost impossible to hear. This voice tells the individual why their life is so terrible, and why things will never get better.
The singer recounts how people had told them they had no problems, and that they were self-deceived. But the singer knew that there were deep-seated issues they were facing, and they found themselves drawn to people who ultimately took advantage of them. These individuals were not necessarily cruel or malicious, but they were also not loving or caring. They were merely well-intentioned, but this emptiness is what killed the singer. The promises held out by these people were never fulfilled, and the dread that things would never get better weighed heavily on them.
However, the singer ultimately finds a way out of their troubles. It comes in the form of a dream offering advice to get a new life contract that spelled out the dues. With determination, and a clear conscience, the singer was able to find this new contract and sign it. It allowed them to finally dream of good times, and all of it came true. This is a song that speaks to the pain and struggles that people go through, but it also offers a glimmer of hope for those who are willing to fight for a new life.

Just Wow !
1. I am so happy to see the date and that Passim was able to pull off a Smither show in late January of this year/2021.
2. the (last time) I saw Chris play was at the 'Me and Thee' in Marblehead a cpl seasons ago.
I waited till he did all his 'meet an greet' and hustling of 'merch'. Then I spoke with with him. He said come on back an let's chat while I pack my gear. I had the immense privilege to sit in that same back room as I had from the time was a 10 yr old boy (when the Coffee house first opened my Dad was the door man (cough, security/bouncer) and my mom was volunteering in the kitchen). I told him that I had his music ingrained in me (My dad brought home 'Don't it drag on' when I maybe 11 yrs old). I told him of how both his dark lyrics had sustained me through some of my dark times and his whimsical stuff had always lifted my creative spirit.
He asked what 'got me through' ?
I started into "...Well Monday seemed seven days long last week ...N Tuesday's only half way there..." he joined in and together, ...Capella we sang "Well noon time crawled past past Tuesday and Wednesday only gently abused me. We just slide on through. Yuh know, The rest don't get to me now...
He is a living legend !
He is such a whole human
He has influenced my life
for half a century.

Wow... The fact that this gem is buried so deeply in the worldwide chaos that it might just go almost unnoticed certainly proves that the devil is real.

It was hilarious. I saw him play this for the first time live. The audience was partially shocked. "The Devil Us Real"? By our blessed Apostate!! He explained. Don't Recall. I think he wanted a little shock value. Ha! He's so awesome.
