Letissier has used numerous personal and stage names, and remarked that he "just ha many names for all the layers". He began his career as Christine and the Queens. For his second studio album, he shortened it to Chris, which was accompanied by a shift to a persona described as "a woman playing with masculine tropes". In October 2021, he was using the name Rahim. This sparked a debate around cultural appropriation due to the name's Arabic origin. He eventually began using a succession of different names such as Sam le pompier (the French title of Fireman Sam) and a full stop before settling on Redcar, sometimes shortened as Red. In August 2022, he updated his pronouns to he/him across social media platforms. In 2023, with the release of fourth album Paranoïa, Angels, True Love, he seemed to have reverted to simply Chris. However, he still occasionally uses his birth name, about which he said: "Héloïse Letissier is my parents' provenance and I love my parents. I sometimes use Héloïse to reconnect me to my childhood, but my inner child name is Manamané."
Be Freaky
Christine and the Queens Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And it's like oh oh oh
And all my tears keep running from their mouth when they smile
I'm dancing with my Queens for my wounds to dry
And it's like oh oh oh
And all my tears keep running from their mouth when they smile
God my face is dusty
Mes mains sont sales, je les lave contre elle
Come on, she says, be freaky freaky
Are you really on your own
What did you say?
Are you really all alone?
Toi si blanche et si petite chérie
I'm dancing with my Queens for my wounds to dry
And they're singing oh oh oh
And all my tears keep running from their mouth when they smile
I'm dancing with my Queens for my wounds to dry
And they're singing oh oh oh
And all my tears keep running from their mouth when they smile
She said to me: Be freaky! (ad lib)
J'ai la tête qui tourne
J'me sens pas bien
The song "Be Freaky" by Christine and the Queens is a celebration of self-expression and breaking free from societal norms. The lyrics suggest that the singer is healing from emotional wounds by dancing with her Queens, who help her forget her troubles and embrace her individuality. The repetition of the phrase "And all my tears keep running from their mouth when they smile" signifies the Queens' ability to heal not just the singer's physical wounds, but also her emotional pain.
The pre-chorus of the song describes the singer's physical state, portraying her as someone who feels unrecognizable, with dusty face and dirty hands. The use of the personal pronoun "elle" suggests that the singer is seeking solace in a female figure. The chorus, on the other hand, emphasizes the power of the Queens' music to cleanse and heal, as the singer repeats "And it's like oh oh oh" to express the joy she feels.
The second half of the lyrics describe the Queen's encouragement to "Be freaky". The phrase is repeated multiple times, encouraging the listener to embrace their uniqueness and not conform to societal expectations. The song ends with the singer feeling unwell, unsure of her identity, and the Queens reminding her to be true to herself.
Overall, "Be Freaky" is an uplifting song that emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and celebrating individuality.
