We Three Kings
Christmas Carols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign.

O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Frankincense to offer have I.
Incense owns a Deity nigh.
Prayer and praising all men raising,
Worship Him, God on high.

O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Myrrh is mine: Its bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom.
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.

O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Sounds through the earth and skies.

O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "We Three Kings" tells the story of the journey of three wise men or magi who traveled from the East to visit the newborn baby Jesus, who was born in Bethlehem. The three kings followed a star, which they believed to be a sign of the birth of the new king. As they traveled, they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to present to the baby Jesus. "We Three Kings" is a song that highlights the journey of the Kings from the East, their gifts and how they worshiped the Baby Jesus, and the role of the guiding star that led them to the child.

The first verse describes the journey of the three kings as they traverse afar, over fields and fountains, moors and mountains, following the star that would eventually land them in Bethlehem. The second and third verses focus on each of the gifts the kings brought, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and the religious symbolism associated with each offering. The fourth verse describes the glory of the baby Jesus as he ascends into the heavens, and the triumph of the solemn occasion. The song ends with an "Alleluia," which means "Praise the Lord" and is a celebratory expression of praise to God, to mark the beauty and spectacle of the occasion of the birth of Jesus.
