Silver Bells
Christmas Songs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Christmas makes you feel emotional
It may bring parties or thoughts devotional
Whatever happens or what may be,
Here is what Christmas time means to me.

City sidewalk, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style.
In the air there's
A feeling of Christmas.

Children laughing, people passing,
Meeting smile after smile,
And on every street corner you'll hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,
It's Christmas time in the city.
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,
Soon it will be Christmas day.

City street lights,
Even stop lights,
Blink a bright red and green,
As the shoppers rush home
With their treasures.

Hear the snow crunch,
See the kids bunch,
This is Santa's big scene,
And above all this bustle you'll hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,
It's Christmas time in the city.

Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,
Soon it will be Christmas day.

City sidewalks, bloody sidewalks,
Drenched in massacre style,
In the air there is a feeling,
of Dread.
Children crying,
People dying
Meeting screams after screams,
And on every street corner you'll hear :
Silver bells, silver bells
It's murder time in the city
ring- a- ling, hear them zing,
soon it will be a blood soaked day.
Strings of intestines,
On every stop light,
Blink a dark red and green
As the shoppers rush,
home to escape the madness.
Hear the snow crunch,
See the kids hunched over,
This is the Tall Man's big scene,
And above all this bustle
You'll hear :
Silver bells, silver bells
It's murder time in the city,
Ring-a-ling, hear them zing,
Soon it will be a blood soaked day.😉

It's 1972. My dad just finished putting up our shiny new silver Christmas tree. It came with a lamp that shines through a round plastic lens that rotates so that the four different colors are projected onto the tree making it sparkle from red to blue, yellow and green. My sister and I are unpacking and hanging ornaments. There's a knock at the front door and it's my grandma. She brought presents to put under the tree. This song is playing at some point during all of this, along with all the other popular Christmas songs from the time. The music never seems to stop because dad keeps a stack of 33 1/3's rotating on the turntable of his wood case console stereo. The last thing I recall hearing before drifting off to sleep is Gene Autry singing about Rudolph. I'm 8 years old and nothing could be more perfect. Baby Jesus is about to have another birthday and Santa Claus will be coming. I'm 57 now. Mom and dad have passed along with most of my aunts and uncles, grandparents long gone. So what I try to do now is to make Christmas at least as special as I remember for my grandchildren. I maintain the traditions that I learned when I was a child. Merry Christmas everyone. May there be peace on earth for this special holiday. 🙏🎄

I have a very similar memory. Merry Christmas. I also remember getting dressed up, being nervous and singing this song in my choir Christmas recital. I used to listen to this to prepare. My grandma and grandpa in the audience cheering me on. We were no Dino but…I am 41 but this is what I grew up with.

Nothing like the 1970s Christmas Days

@MrGeorgewf

We had that exact same tree. It came with red ornaments shaped like apples. I loved that tree.
