Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Christy Carew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in his hand
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth he stood,
Lord of lords in human vesture,
In the Body and the Blood
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of Light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph;
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the Presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry,

"Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, Lord Most High!"

My relatives were watching this episode a few hours before my mother's memorial service in 2018. I heard it from another room and didn't see but a few seconds of it. The song was a welcome sighting of a favorite Anglican hymn in my acute bereavement and felt like a direct act of grace on that day. I later found out the story events it went with. The song works there because of how close "awesome and august" can be to "terrifying" though that is seldom in conscious awareness. This left me grateful for a Higher Power who offered sacrifice FOR us instead of requiring it OF us. The premortem requiem for those "Whom you command to depart from us" in the episode...!

We sing this song in Mass, but this is the most beautiful rendition I have heard! I recognized it when watching The Blacklist!🙂

The juxtaposition of the horrific acts in the show with this beautiful, plaintive music is chilling!
