Something Cool
Christy June Lyrics

Something cool,
Something cool,
I'd like to order something cool!
Something cool, (something cool)
I'd like to order something cool, (something cool)
It's so warm here in town,
Yes, I'd like something cool! (something cool)
My! It's nice to simply sit and rest awhile,
Now I know it's a shame,
I can't think of your name,
I remember your smile!
I don't ordinarily drink with strangers,
I most usually drink alone.
You were so awfully nice to me,
And I'm so terribly far from home.
Like my dress? I must confess it's terribly old,
But it's simple and neat,
It's just right for the heat,
Save my furs for the cold!
A cigarette? Well I don't smoke them as a rule,
but I'll have one,
It might be fun
With something cool!
I'll bet you couldn't imagine
That I one time had a house
With so many rooms I couldn't count them all!
I'll bet you couldn't imagine
I had fifteen different beaus
Who would beg and beg to take me to a ball.
I'll bet you couldn't picture me
The time I went to Paris in the Fall,
And who would think the man I loved was quite so handsome,
Quite so tall?
Well it's true, (something cool)
It's just a memory I have, (something cool)
One I almost forgot
'Cause the weather's so hot!
And I'm feeling so bad (something cool)
About a date,
Oh wait!
I'm such a fool!
He's just a guy
Who's stopped to buy
Me something cool!
The lyrics of Christy June's "Something Cool" is a story told in a monologue by a lonely, world-weary woman who takes herself out to a bar and orders a "something cool" to escape the heat and monotony of her life. In the first stanza, she repeats the phrase "something cool" three times, indicating her desperate need for relief, and then clarifies that she wants to order a drink. She talks about how she cannot remember the name of the stranger she is with, but she likes the attention he is giving her.
She goes on to talk about her life and background, revealing that she is a former socialite who had a big house with many rooms and had 15 different suitors at one time. She seems to regret a lost love as the weather is too hot and leaves her feeling downcast. She then proceeds to ask for a cigarette though she doesn't smoke as she thinks it might be fun with her drink. She concludes by telling the stranger she is not interested in a date and he is just a guy who stopped to buy "me something cool" and not someone she intends to get to know further.
The song is an excellent example of storytelling through lyrics, with Christy June portraying the loneliness and emptiness of the character's life through her words. The woman's story is a glimpse into a life of glamour and excitement that she left behind, and she is now disillusioned with the world around her. The song's melancholic tone is emphasized by the accompanying music, which is slow and mournful.

Something so wonderful about a torch song, and very few could sing them like Miss June Christy. this song and Miss Otis Regrets make me tear up. These songs show so much vulnerability and fragility of a womans feelings. So much realism about how a woman feels, unlike today's power woman songs of denial of feeling and emotions when dealing with sadness

Had the pleasure to see June Christy, the Four Freshmen and the Stan Kenton orchestra on the Road Show tour, back in the ... well, a while back. One of my favorite musical memories. It was a delight!
