The would-be next album, "Dear Tommy" (2016), was scrapped, and was meant to be re-worked for a subsequent release, however the fate of album is unclear, as on August 10, 2021, Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller and Nat Walker announced the breaking up of Chromatics. Later that day the label, Italians Do It Better, and Johnny Jewel's representative, also confirmed the breakup. Their last album is "Closer to Grey" (2019), which has a companion album, "Faded Now" (2020).
The band originally hailed from Seattle and formed in 2002 as a quartet featuring vocalist Adam Miller, drummer Hannah Blilie, guitarist Devin Welch, and bassist Michelle Nolan. That lineup debuted in 2002 with a Calvin Johnson-produced 7" on Gold Standard Laboratories -- a split with Die Monitr Batss -- and followed with the similarly GSL-issued Chrome Rats vs Basement Ruts LP.
While Chrome Rats was critically hailed, Chromatics couldn't keep it together, and Miller was soon the only member in good standing (Blilie, Welch, and Nolan went on to form the similar-sounding Shoplifting). Unworried, Miller added guitar and drum programming to his vocal duties and tapped bassist Nat Sahlstrom for the 2003 GSL 7" Ice Hatchets. That was followed by the February 2004 full-length Plaster Hounds (which featured the percussion work of Get Hustle's Ron Avila), and a repositioning of the Chromatics axis to greater reflect its dub and no wave influences.
This lineup too dissolved and Adam Miller relocated Chromatics to Portland, teaming up with Glass Candy's Johnny Jewel, Ruth Radelet on lead vocals, and Nat Walker on percussion and saxophone. The new lineup of Chromatics had a more lo-fi electronic sound as opposed to the earlier dub and no-wave sounds.
Girls Just Wanna Have Some

"When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh mother dear we're not fortunate ones
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, just wanna have fun
The phone rings in the middle of night my father yells
"What you gonna do with your life?"
But girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, just wanna have fun
That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, just wanna have fun
Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide them away from the rest of the world
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, just wanna have fun
That's all we really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, just wanna have fun
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
They just wanna
When the working day is done
(They just wanna, they just wanna)
Oh Girls, they wanna have fun
(They just wanna, they just wanna)
Oh Girls, just wanna have fun
When the working day is done
Oh Girls, they wanna have fun
Oh Girls, just wanna have fun
The lyrics of "Girls Just Wanna Have Some" by Chromatics shed light on the universal desire for fun and freedom in the lives of young women. The singer in the song is met with disapproval and questioning from her parents about her lifestyle choices. Her mother questions her on when she will start living her life correctly, to which she responds by acknowledging that they are not privileged individuals and simply want to enjoy themselves. The repeated phrase "girls just wanna have fun" conveys the idea that women are looking for opportunities to break free from societal expectations and norms, seeking a sense of joy and liberation.
The interaction with the singer's father further solidifies the tension between her desires for fun and her family's expectations of her. While her father may still hold a significant place in her life, the singer asserts that girls prioritize their own enjoyment and sense of fulfillment. The song captures the generational divide between parents and their daughters, highlighting the clash between traditional values and the longing for independence and personal fulfillment.
The lyrics emphasize the simplicity of what girls truly want - to have fun. The repetition of the chorus "girls just wanna have fun" reinforces this message, underscoring the idea that after a long day of work or facing societal pressures, women seek opportunities to let loose and enjoy themselves without restraint. This resonates with the idea of reclaiming agency and autonomy over one's own life, asserting the right to pursue happiness and pleasure on one's own terms.
In the final verses, the song contrasts the notion of some boys taking beautiful girls and hiding them away, perpetuating the idea of women being kept from experiencing the world and all its possibilities. The singer expresses her desire to bask in the sunlight, to break free from confinement, and to embrace a life full of excitement and joy. Ultimately, "Girls Just Wanna Have Some" serves as an anthem for empowerment and self-expression, advocating for women to prioritize their own desires for fun and fulfillment, even in the face of societal pressures and expectations.

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
Some boys take a beautiful girl

Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
That's all they really want
