Freckle
Chuck Prophet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I like the way you freckle
I like way you peel
I love to see your hair in a mess

It's been a long September
It's gonna be a longer winter
Let me help you out of that dress
Before you catch a cold

We're rising and we're falling
Falling and we're rising, lost on the invisible sea
A thousand stolen kisses, a crime without a witness
Throw me overboard captain would you please
I just can't stand myself

I never liked your brother
Couldn't stand that little bugger
I had to see him every day
Your father at the factory, he always had it in for me
Ain't going back there, no how, no way, never again

I like the way you freckle
I like way you peel
I love to see your hair in a mess

It's been a long September
Gonna be a longer winter
Let me help you out of that dress

Gotta feel your skin upon my skin
Skin upon, skin upon

Overall Meaning

In Chuck Prophet's song, Freckle, he expresses his affection for his lover's unique features, such as her freckles and messy hair. The first verse establishes the physical attraction between the two and sets the scene in which the song progresses. The second verse takes a darker turn, referencing the struggles that the couple may be facing, with the use of the metaphor of an "invisible sea." The singer mentions stolen kisses, possibly signifying a secret romance. He then requests to be thrown overboard, suggesting a desire to escape his own feelings and impulses.

The final verse alludes to potential family troubles, with the singer disliking his lover's brother and having negative encounters with her father. However, these past experiences do not deter his love for her as he acknowledges his affection. The repetition of the first and second verses emphasizes a cyclical nature in the singer's emotions, reflecting the ebb and flow of their relationship.

Overall, Freckle is a poignant portrayal of romantic desire and complex emotions in a relationship. The song's themes of physical attraction, hidden love, and familial conflicts add layers of depth to the song, making it relatable and poignant.

Very nice! It's always good hearing some new Chuck Prophet, and seeing some new Danny Plotnick.

"It's got a snappy beat and the kids can dance to it." I've been a fan of Chuck (and of Danny Plotnick) since the mid-80s. It's great to finally see him getting the attention he deserves. In 18 months from now when every alterna-slacker boho in America is sporting a "You could make a doubter out of Jesus" T-shirt, I'll be the first to stand up and say "I knew him when...." --Michael W. You can never figure out the American music crowd.... This would ONLY be played on public radio is my guess so you either have to go out, pay attention to the internet or listen to PUBLIC RADIO! (which the republicans want to X out)

@RealDoozer Unfortunately, in the modern music biz, putting out good music is not a requirement. Neither is talent. Sex appeal and marketability to teenage girls is. That's ok though, being more underground means Chuck can keep making real, great music without the over production and polishing that comes with mainstream success.
