Lost
Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I'm wondering under prehistoric skies.
I feel it's all beginning right before my eyes.
I must go back, reexamine my love.
Here she comes with the penetrated stare.

I don't know when, but I wish I knew where.
Quick calculation, there's not nearly enough.
Because we're lost, because we're lost.
Cold desert stars, feel them sparkle and frost,
They are so lost.

Follow her down to worship some god.
Who never speaks to me, I wonder if that's odd.
Then he says you're never listening.
The pursuit of adulation is your butter and your bread.

It's an exquisite corpse and its lips are red
And its teeth are glistening.
But you are lost, but you are lost.
Now hang up 'cause the lines are all crossed,
You are so lost.

If you're alone and you're feeling blue,
Everyone in Persia probably feels like that too.
I just hope they don't believe like you do.
Here she comes with her unforgiving web.

Almost forever I've been drinking these dregs.
It must be time to change our brew, cruel, view.
Before we're lost, before we're lost.
Look at the map, add up the cost,
Before we're lost.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in ‘Lost’ by Church are introspective and thought-provoking, leaving listeners wondering about the meaning behind the words. The song seems to be recounting a journey, both physical and emotional, with the central metaphor of being lost. The opening line is evocative, drawing us in and making us think about the vastness of time and space. The singer reflects on how everything seems to be starting anew, as if the world is just beginning. The feeling of being lost in time is tangible. The phrase “prehistoric skies” conjures up images of a primordial world where everything is new and strange.

The second stanza in ‘Lost’ talks about a relationship or love lost, and the need to go back and reexamine it. The “penetrated stare” is a powerful image that suggests something negative, and the line “I don’t know when, but I wish I knew where” builds on the sense of uncertainty and confusion. The singer feels overwhelmed by their emotions but seems to be comforted by the beauty of the starry night sky. However, even the stars are lost, cold, and seemingly forgotten.

The third stanza of ‘Lost’ discusses the pursuit of fame and adulation, and how it can leave one feeling hollow and empty. The line “It’s an exquisite corpse and its lips are red and its teeth are glistening” is vague yet beautiful, perhaps an allusion to the dark side of success. The singer realizes that they too are lost, and even the gods they worship do not listen to them.

Overall, ‘Lost’ by Church is a hauntingly beautiful song that leaves us thinking about the nature of our existence, the search for love and acceptance, and the ultimate futility of material success.

Underappreciated, even in their own country. Most people only remember them for a few hits back in the 80's, but they have been releasing sublime albums for decades. There have been more famous and revered Australian bands (most of whom made only one or two decent albums in their careers), but The Church stand head and shoulders above them all in terms of quality, consistency, and relevance.

Maybe the best Church song of all time! Very underrated...the rhythm of the song at the end makes one feel as you are driving on a WEST TEXAS road at 230 AM... Almost like you own the night.

@PlanTonto

I saw these cats back in the day...Everyone was waiting for "Under The Milkyway"...I liked that song, but i liked this one better...They were playing in a small place, so you could go up and talk to them..During the set break, I asked if they could play this...They did!!! I was in heaven!! Blue Aeroplane opened for them. They were playing in Washington D.C. at an old sound studio that used to be a roller skating rink...The acoustics were awesome there!!!
