Left For America

An' put my hat on my head
'Cause I want to sleep out with the stars
Not in the dark with the dead
When I'm ready I'll give you the sign
You can gather me up like a quilt
Tell my mother I tried, tell my cousin I lied
I was holding your hand out of guilt
hold it under and stole your heart
Let's hold it under at my place
Any wave
Hold it under and style your heart
Let's hold it under at my place
Any wave
You cover me up with a thousand whispers
You shuffle me into the night
Whistle and hum to the traffic rum?... unintelligible mumbling. I give up
The lyrics to Ciaran Lavery's song "Left For America" describe the desire to sleep out under the stars instead of being buried in darkness. The singer suggests that when they are ready, they will signal for their loved ones to gather them up like a quilt, but also acknowledges the guilt of the hold they shared with another person. They never made their way and never returned the love they received, causing them to lie to their cousin and feel a sense of regret. The singer also mentions holding something under and stealing hearts, which may symbolize the deep emotional connection they had with someone but ultimately lost. The song ends with the soothing comfort of whispers and sounds of a bustling city, suggesting that the singer has finally found peace in their journey.
The lyrics evoke a sense of longing and a desire for connection, as well as a feeling of regret and missed opportunities. The mention of stars and the night sky create a calming, serene atmosphere, while the suggestion of holding something under and stealing hearts suggests a more intense, even dark, emotional experience. The use of second-person pronouns also contributes to the intimate and personal nature of the song, making it feel like a confession or a private conversation.
