1. Mayumi Ya… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least four artists under the name "Cindy":
1. Mayumi Yamamoto (山本真裕美, born May 5, 1958), known solely by her stage name Cindy, was a Japanese singer-songwriter, active as a singer from 1984 to 1997 and as a songwriter from 1984 to 1998.
She is probably best known for her song "私達を信じていて", and composing multiple Number One hits for Miho Nakayama, namely "人魚姫", "Witches" and "ROSÉCOLOR".
She passed away due to cancer at the age of 42 in Los Angeles, on January 12th, 2001.
2. A pop punk group from Auckland New Zealand
3. Kai Hugo, the dutch house producer rebranded himself as Palmbomen II in 2015 and released an ace album of psychedelic acid jams on Beats In Space. He named all the tracks on that record after various minor characters from episodes of The X-Files, but one of them – ‘Cindy Savalas’ – stuck somehow.
His next album, Memories of Cindy, filled in a fictional biography. Cindy lived in the small Californian town of Carmel Vista and died in mysterious circumstances. Hugo hired actor and model Blue LoLãn to give a face and voice to the character, and she sang on a few of the tracks – notably its blistering highlight, ‘Are You Friends with Amber?’.
Now Cindy has her own album – a pretty good, shoegaze-tinged dream pop record, recorded before the character’s ‘death’, with a loose narrative about her life, loves, and heartbreaks. LoLãn is front and centre, singing and talking on every track, breathing life into a character that has become an uncanny avatar for both LoLãn and Hugo.
4. San Franciso based group fronted by Karina Gill, together with Aaron Diko, Jesse Jackson and Simon Phillips. They released their first self-titled album in 2018, followed by Free Advice in 2020 and 1:2 in 2021. They are due to release a new album, Why Not Now?, on 14th April 2023.
Earthly belonging
Cindy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
another day without much to say
I see you standing tall
amid the getting and the spending
Could you look my way?
I'm with the beggars and the choosers
No your eyes aren't blue
They're a different shade every time I see you
at the getting and the spending
The right's shot through with pink
for the beggars and the choosers
You know what they say
can't win if you don't play but you can cry at your party
Though my eyes fill up with tears
for the getting and the spending
still none of this is mine
I'm with the beggars and the choosers
In "Earthly Belonging," Cindy paints a portrait of someone who stands out amidst the busyness of life, comparing them to a lily of the field. This person seems content with simplicity, quietly observing the world around them without feeling the need to contribute much. Cindy, however, longs for their attention, hoping that they will notice her amidst the chaos.
The reference to "getting and spending" suggests the materialistic nature of society, where people are focused on accumulating wealth and possessions. While the person Cindy is addressing seems unaffected by this, the singer finds themselves caught up in the game of acquiring and consuming. This contrast highlights the allure of a more detached and simplistic way of life.
The mention of the person's eyes being a "different shade every time" suggests that they possess a multifaceted nature or an ability to adapt and see the world from different perspectives. The left eye represents skepticism towards the materialistic lifestyle, while the right eye reflects a compassionate and empathetic view towards those who struggle and have to make choices.
Cindy recognizes the popular saying "can't win if you don't play," which implies that one must actively participate in life to achieve success. However, she also acknowledges that sometimes, despite playing the game, one can still end up feeling isolated and tearful. This may be a metaphor for the singer's feelings of emptiness or disillusionment amidst the pursuit of material wealth.
Lastly, the line "none of this is mine" reveals the singer's realization that material possessions and the pursuit of wealth ultimately hold no true significance. Instead, she identifies herself as one of the "beggars and choosers," emphasizing her alignment with those who have less and must make choices with limited resources. This suggests that true belonging and fulfillment come from recognizing the importance of empathy and compassion, rather than material accumulation.
Overall, "Earthly Belonging" explores the dichotomy between a person who embodies simplicity and detachment from materialism and the singer's struggle to find meaning and connection within a society that prioritizes getting and spending. It encourages reflection on what truly matters in life and the desire for a deeper sense of belonging beyond earthly possessions.
