Party Store
Cindy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behind the counter at the corner store the calendar shows three years before
A two by three of the cashier's kid at least with those brown eyes it must be his
But it's late at night and I'm not going to ask about the tiny face beneath the plexiglass
Sometimes you say you're feeling small
You plan all day for your own funeral
The cold cold light and the organ plays
Your deadbeat dad there in a suit of gray
It's late at night but you want me to ask about your mother's love and your sordid past
I'm not a fool who wants to turn back time
Erase the jagged line
Because there was no time before you

There was just you the time before
It's late at night and I don't want to know why the future comes fast and the past goes so slow

Overall Meaning

In "Party Store", Cindy vividly describes a scene at a corner store, where she notices a calendar showing three years before. Behind the store counter, there is a small photograph of the cashier's child, perhaps a two by three size, with captivating brown eyes. Cindy refrains from asking about the tiny face behind the plexiglass, sensing it might be a delicate topic. The late night setting adds a sense of mystery and introspection.

The lyrics also touch on the theme of feeling small and planning for one's own funeral, reflecting a sense of vulnerability and perhaps a contemplation of mortality. The cold, cold light and the melancholic organ playing create a somber atmosphere. The mention of a deadbeat dad in a gray suit implies a lack of emotional support or a strained father-child relationship.

Cindy acknowledges that even though it's late at night, the person she is addressing wants her to inquire about the love of their mother and their troubled past. However, she does not want to dwell on these details. The lyrics convey her refusal to dwell on the past and a desire to embrace the present and the future, understanding that time moves differently for different experiences. The contrast between the fast-paced future and the slow-moving past further encapsulates the complexity of time and personal histories.

Overall, "Party Store" captures an introspective and reflective mood, exploring themes of family relationships, vulnerability, and the passage of time.

Brilliant. The writer is defying us to say ‘I’ve heard it before’ or ‘it’s too simple & obvious’ but that is it’s beauty. It’s in your face simple, melodic and atmospheric. Oh, by the way, you haven’t heard it before, it’s so good you just think you have.

What I also like about this band is that they get in and out real quick. Like The Beatles used to. And Buddy Holly.

PXL2000 app for the win, just terrific. Reminds me of 1988 so much, and whoever filmed this did a great job of not getting anything recent.... still have one of these units buried here somewhere, but this looks a bit too "clean" to have been done with a real Fisher-Price cassette cam.
