Aged 21, Claire formed a quartet which featured Jim Mullen on guitar and Jonathon Gee on piano. In 1991 Claire signed to the Linn label.
She achieved instant recognition with her debut album "The Waiting Game", which was chosen as one of the Times records of the year. 1994 saw Claire receive the Rising Star award at the British Jazz awards. By 1995 Claire had made three more critically acclaimed albums for Linn Records and made her American debut with four sell-out shows in Washington DC, receiving rave reviews from the Washington Post and The Village Voice.
Later that year Claire won the Best Vocalist Award at the British Jazz Awards and took her group to Ronnie Scott's Club to make her first live album titled "Offbeat".
In 2000 Claire started presenting the jazz magazine show "Jazz Line Up" for BBC Radio 3.
In July 2003 the third BBC Jazz Awards named Claire Vocalist of the Year.
"Talented and hip beyond her years.... the most exciting jazz star to soar to my attention in a decade" Rex Reed - The New York Observer.
Everything Must Change
Claire Martin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nothing stays the same
Everyone must change
No one stays the same
The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
There are not many things in life
That we can be sure of
Is it
rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly
(Guitar)
Winter turns to spring
A wounded heart will heal
never much too soon
everything must change
The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged
There are not many things in life
That we can be sure of
Except
rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly ...
(Guitar)
Winter turns to spring
A wounded heart will heal
But never much too soon
everything must change
The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
(that's the way of time)
Nothing and no one goes unchanged
There are not many things in life
You can be sure of
Except, rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly
Except, rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly
Except, rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly
Everything must change
Claire Martin's song Everything Must Change is an insightful meditation on the nature of change and the inevitability of time. The lyrics suggest that everything is in a constant state of flux and nothing stays the same. The opening lines "Everything must change, Nothing stays the same, Everyone must change, No one stays the same" set the tone for the rest of the song.
The lyrics also suggest that change can be both beautiful and painful. Winter turns to spring and a wounded heart will heal, but never much too soon. The young become the old and mysteries do unfold. The passage of time can be both exciting and daunting, as we face the unknown and embark on new journeys in life.
The final lines of the song emphasize the limited certainties in life: rain comes from the clouds, sun lights up the sky, and hummingbirds do fly. In essence, the song suggests that while change is inevitable, we can find solace in the few things that remain constant.
