The King Beneath the Mountains
Clamavi De Profundis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The King beneath the mountains
The King of carven stone
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own

His crown shall be upholding
His harp shall be restrung
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore re-sung

The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And the rivers golden run

The streams shall run in gladness
The lakes shall shine and burn
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the mountain king's return

The King beneath the mountains
The King of carven stone
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own

His crown shall be upholding
His harp shall be restrung
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore re-sung

The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And the rivers golden run

The streams shall run in gladness
The lakes shall shine and burn
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the mountain king's return

The King beneath the mountains
The King of carven stone
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own

His crown shall be upholding
His harp shall be restrung
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore re-sung

The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And the rivers golden run

The streams shall run in gladness
The lakes shall shine and burn
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the mountain king's return

All sorrow fail and sadness
At the mountain king's return

Overall Meaning

"The King Beneath the Mountains" is a song by Clamavi De Profundis that refers to the character of Durin in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, specifically in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Durin was the name given to the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, believed to be the ancestor of all Dwarves in Middle Earth. The song speaks of Durin's return to his rightful place as ruler of his people, with golden halls echoing with songs of old and fountains flowing with wealth. The imagery of waving woods, shining lakes and golden rivers denotes a sense of prosperity that comes with the mountain king's return - as all sadness and sorrow fail in his presence.

The lyrics speak of Durin's reign that would soon come to pass when his crown would be upholding and the harp restrung. It alludes to the wealth of Dwarves, who were known for mining valuable ores and precious gems. The reference to "songs of yore re-sung" could indicate the Dwarves' deep attachment to their culture and tradition.

The song strikes a chord with fans of Tolkien's works who are enamored with the rich lore surrounding the Dwarves. It captures the essence of Durin's legendary status as a wise and just ruler who commands respect from his subjects. It also paints a picture of a prosperous kingdom where life is full of joy and hope, and where the return of the king brings an end to all sorrow and sadness.

My dad first read The Hobbit to me when I was very young.

Every night he'd come into my room, sit on my bed next to me, and read another chapter in the warm glow of a dimmed lamp. He gave all the characters unique voices that made me laugh, and he even sang the songs, making up the tune as he went.

Now, almost twenty years later, sitting in my appartment and listening to this song, I can hear his voice and feel the covers wrapped around me again.

Thank you so much for making this.

(P.S. My dad is still alive and well. This song just brought back some treasured memories.)

I am reading the Hobbit to my 5 year old. I showed this (and your other songs from the book) and he has not stopped singing this for the last few weeks. He also insists of singing it in his deep, dwarven voice. He and his 3 year old sister want this to be the song I sing to them at bedtime. He also enjoys running around the house in a cloak and enormous boots. Thanks for making great stuff like this and for being so much cooler than Aquanauts.
