Clara Lyrics

Pleure Clara, pleure
Qu'on me donne un soldat à attendre
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Pleure Clara, pleure
Clara
The first two lines of the song "Je suis la pleureuse italienne, Recroquevillée sous le chêne" translate to "I am the Italian mourner, huddled under the oak tree." These two lines set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer identifies herself as a mourner and imagines herself in an imaginary cemetery where she mourns with her "brothers." She longs for war or a tyrant to come so that she can have an actual reason to mourn and feel alive.
The singer then desires a soldier to wait for, so that she has a reason to feel sentimental. She describes her hand holding a wet handkerchief, which represents her sadness and possibly tears. The lyrics "C'est moi assise devant tout l'monde, comme la nuit qui vient est sombre" translate to "It's me sitting in front of everyone, as the night that comes is dark." This suggests that Clara is a public mourner and is featured in scenarios of mourning.
The lyrics of the song are open to interpretation. Some believe that Clara symbolizes the mourning of humanity for the atrocities that occur during wartime. Others believe that Clara represents someone who is using mourning as a way to feel a sense of importance or purpose in life. Whatever the interpretation may be, there is no denying the emotional depth of the lyrics and the haunting melody.
