A researcher of Brazilian popular music, its rhythms and folklore, she has also traveled to many countries representing the Brazilian culture. A connoisseur of African music, dance, traditions, and religions, she converted to Candomblé and took Afro-Brazilian culture into her songs and costumes. She was one of the singers who recorded the most songs by the composers of Portela, her favorite samba school. She was also the first female Brazilian singer to sell more than one hundred thousand records, breaking a taboo according to which women did not sell records in Brazil. During her whole career she sold four million four hundred thousand records. She was considered by Rolling Stone magazine as the ninth greatest Brazilian voice and, by the same magazine, the fifty-first greatest Brazilian artist of all time.
On April 2, 1983, she died at age 40, after suffering from anaphylaxis during a surgery to treat varicose veins. Even today she remains one of the most popular singers in Brazil.
Meu Sapato Já Furou
Clara Nunes Lyrics

Minha roupa já rasgou
E eu não tenho onde morar
Meu dinheiro acabou
Eu não sei pra onde vou
Como é que eu vou ficar?
Eu não sei nem mais sorrir
Meu amor me abandonou
E pra melhorar minha situação
Eu fiz promessa pra São Luís Durão
Quem me vê assim pode até pensar
Que eu cheguei ao fim
Mas quando a minha vida melhorar
Eu vou zombar de quem sorriu de mim
Meu sapato já furou
This song from Clara Nunes paints a picture of a woman who has hit rock-bottom. Her shoe is already torn, her clothes are ripped, and she has no place to live. She has no money left, no direction, and no reason to smile. To make matters worse, she has been abandoned by her love without any justification.
The only solution left for her is to make a promise to Saint Luis Durão, who is known for helping people in need. She hopes that by doing this, her life will take a turn for the better. The chorus is a promise that when her life does improve, she will mock those who laughed at her in the past.
The song is ultimately about the resilience of the human spirit. Even when everything seems to be falling apart, there is always a glimmer of hope. The promise to Saint Luis Durão represents this hope and the belief that things will eventually get better.

Foi uma perda irreparável a sua morte. Quatro décadas sem a nossa querida Clara Guerreira.

Lembro-me muito bem desta música. Risos.
