Peace In The Valley
Clara Ward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh well, I'm tired and so weary
But I must go alone
Till the lord comes and calls, calls me away, oh yes
Well the morning's so bright
And the lamp is alight
And the night, night is as black as the sea, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow
No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me

Well the bear will be gentle
And the wolves will be tame
And the lion shall lay down by the lamb, oh yes
And the beasts from the wild
Shall be lit by a child
And I'll be changed, changed from this creature that I am, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow

No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me

Overall Meaning

Clara Ward's "Peace in the Valley" is a gospel song about the hope for peace and eternal rest in the afterlife. The singer declares that she is tired and weary, but knows that she must continue on until the Lord calls her away. She contrasts the brightness of the morning with the darkness of the night, suggesting that even when life is tough, there is always hope for a brighter dawn.

The lyrics then describe a vision of a world where animals are gentle and peaceful, and even the fiercest beasts lay down with the gentlest of creatures. This image highlights an important theme of the song: the unification of all beings in peace and harmony. It represents the hope of the singer for a world without sadness, sorrow, or trouble. The final stanza suggests that the ultimate change will come from within, transforming the singer from her current state into a more peaceful and enlightened being.

Overall, the song is a powerful testament to the enduring human desire for peace and a better world. By combining biblical imagery with tangible visions of earthly unity, Clara Ward captures the essence of the gospel message in a way that is both personal and universal.
