Echoes
Clark Gene Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
At the places you have been
Or the moments that you thought
Where am I going
Though the walls are like the dead
They reflect the things you've said
And the echoes in your head continue showing
Near the castles you can build
Won't keep out all of the ill wind that is blowing
And you look still for a trace
Of an opening in a place
Where you find the life that you were used to knowing
You can walk out in the night
And be sure that its alright
To exaggerate the world that's only being
You can watch Regina dance
Through the crystal panes of glass
Yet you know that there's so much that she's not seeing
Still you hold one precious thought
After all this time you've sought
That she might be just protecting what she longs for
And her eyes are veiled with black
Cause she plays she can look back
At the love she wanted so but says is no more
The lights go on, commence the cold
As your senses will be sold
To the parrot watchers mimicing no reasons
To pretend that what they are
From the fact completely far
While the truth may be betrayal, lies and treason
Build their towers in the sand
Down the roads at their command
When the kingdom is the innocence they're stealing
And infection easily spreads
To the searching, twisted heads
As they team up to tear down each others feeling
In the song "Echoes" by Gene Clark, the lyrics reflect a sense of introspection and contemplation. The first verse sets the scene, describing the streets and places where the singer has been, and the moments that make them question their path in life. The walls around them feel lifeless, resembling the echoes of their own thoughts that continue to haunt them.
The second verse introduces the concept of building castles out of unfulfilled dreams. The singer realizes that these dreams cannot protect them from the harsh realities of life, represented by the ill wind blowing. They search for an opening, a place where they can find the familiar life they once knew, but struggle to find it.
The third verse introduces the character of Regina, who dances through panes of glass. Despite her apparent joy, the singer understands that there is much she is missing or ignoring. The singer holds onto the belief that Regina may be protecting what she truly desires, although her eyes are shielded with black, indicating she refuses to look back at the love she wanted but now claims is no more.
The final verse shifts focus to a larger societal critique. The lights come on, symbolizing a cold and indifferent world. The "parrot watchers" mimic without reason, pretending to be something they are far from. The truth is betrayal, lies, and treason, suggesting a deeply corrupted society. These individuals build their towers of power in the sand, exerting control over others while stealing their innocence. Infection easily spreads among the twisted minds, leading them to team up and tear down each other's emotions.
Overall, "Echoes" explores themes of introspection, the fleeting nature of dreams, the complexities of love and desire, and the corrupting nature of society. The lyrics invite us to reflect on our own journey, to question the illusions we create, and to confront the destructive forces that surround us.

On the streets you look again
While walking through the streets, you take another glance
At the places you have been
At the locations you have previously visited
Or the moments that you thought
Or the instances that you pondered
Where am I going
Where exactly am I headed
Though the walls are like the dead
Although the walls resemble lifelessness
They reflect the things you've said
They mirror the words you have spoken
And the echoes in your head continue showing
And the sounds reverberating in your mind persistently reveal
Near the castles you can build
Close to the imaginary fortresses you can construct
Out of dreams you half fulfilled
Using dreams that you only partially achieved
Won't keep out all of the ill wind that is blowing
Won't prevent the arrival of the harmful breeze that is prevailing
And you look still for a trace
And you continue to search for a hint
Of an opening in a place
Of an opportunity in a location
Where you find the life that you were used to knowing
Where you encounter the existence you were familiar with
You can walk out in the night
You are able to venture outside during the night
And be sure that its alright
And be certain that it is acceptable
To exaggerate the world that's only being
To magnify the world that is only existing
You can watch Regina dance
You can observe Regina dancing
Through the crystal panes of glass
Through the translucent windows
Yet you know that there's so much that she's not seeing
Yet you are aware that there is much she is unaware of
Still you hold one precious thought
Nevertheless, you cling to one precious thought
After all this time you've sought
After all the time you have dedicated to searching
That she might be just protecting what she longs for
That she might be safeguarding what she desires intensely
And her eyes are veiled with black
And her eyes are concealed with darkness
Cause she plays she can look back
Because she pretends that she can reminisce
At the love she wanted so but says is no more
At the love she yearned for but claims no longer exists
The lights go on, commence the cold
The lights shine, signaling the beginning of the chill
As your senses will be sold
As your senses will be traded
To the parrot watchers mimicking no reasons
To the people imitating without purpose
To pretend that what they are
To feign what they truly are
From the fact completely far
Completely distant from reality
While the truth may be betrayal, lies and treason
While the truth might consist of betrayal, lies, and treason
Build their towers in the sand
Construct their towers in the unstable ground
Down the roads at their command
Along the paths under their control
When the kingdom is the innocence they're stealing
When the realm they are stealing is innocence
And infection easily spreads
And the contagion spreads effortlessly
To the searching, twisted heads
To the minds that are searching and distorted
As they team up to tear down each others feeling
As they unite to dismantle each other's emotions

Rodriguez-like in vocals and orchestral background! Heard for first time today! ❤
@deathkampdrone
Very Scott Walker-like, I totally agree. Both his pronunciation, and the orchestral sound of the music. I love Gene so much. Without a doubt among the greatest songwriters of all time. White Light is simply amazing (and why that titlesong is not on the tube as of yet I cannot get my head around).

I found White Light on YouTube, snd pisten to it daily.

One of Gene Clark's finest ever songs, and that's saying something - because there were many. A fantastically talented singer/songwriter who gains all the more respect from me, due to the fact that he could never adapt himself to the blandness of American showbiz.

Thinking back, I still can’t believe I saw Gene live. It was the night he supported Lindisfarne in Aldershot/Hampshire. He was brilliant!!!

CINEMATIC Classic. Belongs on a movie soundtrack. Gene Clark was the unsung genius of American music.
