I Know a Place
Clark Petula Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day when the work is behind you
And the shop and the store put the lock on the door
Just get away where your worries won't find you
If you like, well I'll tell you more

Don't let the day get the better of you
When the evening comes there's so much to do
You better put on your best and wear a smile
Just come along with me awhile, 'cause I tell you

I know a place where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go

At the door there's a man who will greet you
Then you go downstairs to some tables and chairs
Soon I'm sure you'll be tappin' your feet
Because the beat is the greatest there

All around there are girls and boys
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of its own somehow
You gotta come along right now 'cause I tell you

I know a place where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go

Well, all around there are girls and boys
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of its own somehow
You gotta come along right now 'cause I tell you

I know a place where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go

I know a place where we can go
I know a place where the lights are low

You gotta love this place I know
I know a place where we can go

Overall Meaning

Clark Petula's song "I Know A Place" is an uplifting number that encourages its listeners to forget about their daily troubles and lose themselves in the joyful atmosphere of a particular place. The song begins by describing how individuals can wind down after work, put aside all their worries, and let the evening's promise fill them with excitement. The pre-chorus encourages listeners to adopt a positive outlook on life and put on their best demeanor, which will entail coming out with the song's protagonist. The chorus expresses how the singer knows a place where the music is excellent and the lights are dim, offering an ideal destination to escape from the world.

The verses describe what can be expected from this place, where one can go to lose themselves in the crowd, tap their feet to the beat, and watch the swinging girls and boys enjoying the atmosphere. It's a place where the sound of the music dominates everything, giving the venue a distinct and lively atmosphere. The repetition of the chorus underlines the song's central point - that the world's woes can be forgotten at this place, where the music is fine and the lights are low.

My uncle's family came up to Maine and all of us were thrilled to see them. All of us had dinner at home r then went skating
at the Portland Roller Drome. The Roller Drome had an oldies night and it was INCREDIBLE!!!!! My aunt Peggy and my uncle
maybe had too much cheer but they were loving what was going on. My aunt, uncle, and my cousins skated to a great oldies
song and were very good!!! My mother, my sisters Eva, Nancy and Caroline were standing next to my mother and me and my
girlfriend Debbie were behind them. My uncle started to tease my mother and then my mother told my uncle's family, " Sit Down
classis now in SESSION"!!! My mother turned to me and said, " C'mon Allie"!! Time to show these people who we ARE"!! All
everyone saw was an INFERNO in my eyes and my energy level go NUCLEAR"!!!!! My mother and I went out on the skate floor and
put on a skate clinic!!! Debbie SCREAMED in delight and joined me then we uncorked dance moves we created for this song. My
sister Eva screamed "HOLY SHIT" and got in the groove with us. Then Nancy and Caroline came out and picked up the groove we
were in!!!! We got done and the Roller Drome ROCKED from the cheering and screaming we received!!!! My uncle, aunt, and cousins
were in SHOCK!!! over the skate lesson we gave them!!! My sister Eva looked at me and Debbie and said, " I don't know where you
got that routine but you ARE going to teach me"!!!! The Owner of the Roller Drome then came out and Kissed my mother and all of
us kids!!!!! My mother said to my uncle, " How did you like the way my kids skate"""!!!!! The Roller Drome erupted in deafening cheering
and screaming!!!!🥰🥰❤❤💋💋✌✌⚡⚡⚡🌀🌀🌀🔥🔥 NUCLEAR!!!!! ME!!!!!!

Can't say that about today's "music"

Darren Plumpton

Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.

Shelby Mitchell

Why she is not in the Rock hall of fame is beyond me as love her music

John Sallee

Darren Plumpton - I agree 💯 I was so in love with her as a lad!!! I always thought it was cool because when they would show things like this on TV, the music is piped-in but her voice is not! If you watch all of her TV videos very closely you can tell that it's not the record when she sings. I had all of her albums, so I noticed right off. Plus she's hip and would throw in a "yeah" or "a-ha" ...
