Headlights
Classic Crime Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A summer drive away from dying
A broken heart, nothing to lose
I know it hurts so bad just trying
To please the ones you hate to love

And I wrote this note
About someone I used to know
So I'd remember how life can be so short
When your left alone to wonder
How it is someone opens and shuts the door

And I know you're cold but come home
It's a shame how short we all have come

You set your mind on cruise control
Knuckles grip the wheel in fear to let it go
Love is empty, love is cruel
Love, it blindly breaks the rules

How could you have been a fool?
It's something all of us go through
You choke back tears and swallow lies
But those wiper blades won't fix you eyes
Count on having clouded vision for at least a little while

And I know you're cold but come home
It's a shame how short we all have come
And I know you're cold but come home
Please don't face the headlights
Of the oncoming cars along

We won't forget the past
We won't forget the past
And I know you're cold

Say all the answers and I will let you go
I won't look back and I won't look back
Say all the answers and I will let you go
I will let you go and I will let you go

Say all the answers and I will let you go
I won't look back and I won't look back
Say all the answers and I will let you go
I will let you go and I will let you go

(Say all the answers and I will let you go)
You're gone
(I won't look back and I won't look back)

Please don't face the headlights
(Say all the answers and I will let you go)
Of the oncoming cars along

(I will let you go)
And I will let you go

Overall Meaning

In Classic Crime's song "Headlights", the singer seems to be reflecting on the pain of a broken heart that is all too common. He is driving away from the situation, symbolizing that he is trying to escape it. He mentions that he wrote a note about someone he used to know, most likely referring to the person who broke his heart, in order to remember how short life can be when you are left alone to wonder about what might have been. The chorus encourages his ex-love to come home even though he knows how cold they feel, as it is a shame how short life is but his love is precious.

In the second verse, the singer describes love as both empty and cruel. He states that it blindly breaks rules and ultimately leads to heartache. He acknowledges that feeling foolish for loving someone is a shared experience, and that it can be difficult to move on from. He also acknowledges that being heartbroken clouds your vision and can take some time to recover from. The chorus again has him urging his ex-love to come home and not face the oncoming cars along the road.

In the final section, the singer seems to be telling his ex-love that if they can give him answers, he will let them go. He acknowledges that he won't look back, but he wants to hear why they did what they did, and then he will let them go. The tone of the song is one of sadness and reflection, with the chorus being the upbeat part of the song.

After an amazing album like this and a good album like The Silver Cord, I think The Classic Crime kind of dropped the ball with Vagabonds. Here's hoping they hit their peak with Phoenix!
