After banshee wailer Poly Styrene departed from X-Ray Spex, the remaining members held auditions for a replacement singer. Solo won the approval of a few of Styrene's former bandmates, and they debuted at the Music Machine on August 1979. Airport left the group before they even recorded their first single; he was replaced by Gary Steadman. In 1981, Classix Nouveaux released "Guilty," one of their most well-known tracks; the track was a Top-20 hit in Sweden and received interest in the U.K. as well as the U.S. The music video also received airplay on MTV.
A year later, the single "Is It a Dream" reached number 13 on the U.K. charts. Despite successful tours in Yugoslavia, Finland, and Poland, none of Classix Nouveaux's three albums truly catapulted them beyond cult status in Britain or America, getting lost in the shuffle of other new romantic groups that they had originally influenced. The band split up in 1985, and Solo started recording Christian music.
In 2021 band has reunited and released album with re-recorded songs from their back catalogue plus some new material in November 2023 entitled "Battle Cry"

Classix Nouveaux Lyrics

Lady of the roses own
Only you San damiano
Far from here but close to home
I want you to go same as me
I want you to know all I've seen
All corners of the world
With heart and soul,
Heart and soul
Only you San damiano
Lady of the roses own
Only you San damiano
Far from here but close to home
Oh tranquility all around
Peace and mystery to be found
Travel the world and still
Can other places fill
Your heart and soul,
Heart and soul
Only you San damiano
Lady of the roses own
Only you San damiano
Far from here but close to home
Only you san damiano
Lady of the roses own
Only you san damiano
Far from here but close to home
Corner of paradise
A golden chain has tied
Us heart and soul,
Heart and soul
Only you San damiano
Lady of the roses own
Only you San damiano
Far from here but close to home
Only you san damiano
Lady of the roses own
Only you san damiano
Far from here but close to home
The lyrics to Classix Nouveaux's song "San Damiano" speak to the singer's desire for a spiritual connection with the Lady of the Roses, who is represented by the San Damiano crucifix. The crucifix is often associated with St. Francis of Assisi, who was believed to have received a message from God while praying before it. The singer wants to share the message of San Damiano with others and have them experience the tranquility and peace that he feels when he thinks of it. The lyrics speak of the singer's travels around the world but how no other place can fill his heart and soul like San Damiano. The phrase "far from here but close to home" emphasizes the idea that the singer feels a deep connection to San Damiano that transcends physical distance.
The lyrics to this song are beautifully written, with vivid imagery that captures the essence of San Damiano. The song speaks to the universal need for spiritual connection and the desire to find a place of peace in a chaotic world. The phrase "heart and soul" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the idea that San Damiano is not just a physical place but a state of being that the singer wants to share with others.

Szukałem tyle lat tej piosenki! Wspaniały utwór! Łączenie popu z muzyką religijną to rzadko spotykane połączenie a jakże niesamowite! Utwór mojego dzieciństwa. Pozdrawiam wszystkich fanów tej piosenki!
