Misirlou
Clebanoff Strings And Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Desert shadows creep across purple sands
Natives kneel in prayer by their caravans

There, silhouetted under and eastern star
I see my long lost blossom of shalimar

You, Misirlou, are the moon and the sun, fairest one
Old temple bells are calling across the sand
We'll find our Kismet, answering love's command

You, Misirlou, are a dream of delight in the night

To an oasis, sprinkled by stars above
Heaven will guide us, Allah will bless our love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Clebanoff Strings And Orchestra's song Misirlou paints a picture of an exotic and mystical land, where desert shadows creep across purple sands and natives kneel in prayer by their caravans. Against this backdrop, the singer sees his long lost love, the "blossom of shalimar," silhouetted under an eastern star. The song's title, Misirlou, means "Egyptian Lady," adding to the air of mystery and exoticism.

The singer compares his love to the moon and the sun, the fairest one, while old temple bells call across the sand, leading them to their destiny, or Kismet, answering love's command. Misirlou represents a dream of delight in the night, a longing for something mysterious and wonderful that seems just out of reach. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the lovers being guided by heaven, and their love being blessed by Allah.

Overall, the lyrics of Misirlou speak to a sense of wanderlust and longing for something different, something exotic and exciting. The Middle Eastern imagery and references to Allah and Kismet add to the sense of otherworldliness and the search for something beyond the mundane.

This music is tremendously scintillating for my soul, and has been a great motivator of energized excitement when I needed to get my butt to be creative. First came across this recording during the mid 60's in Johannesburg, RSA (ZA), at which time I bought my first Clebanoff LP by Mercury Records at the CNA branch on Commissioner Street. At the present time have 3 rare tapes of "Strings Afire In Spain" for safe keeping, on both 15" and 7.5". In the early 70's I was graced with visits to my home by both Mr. Wayne Robinson and Mr. Caesar Giovannini, without whose arrangement contributions this glorious triumph of musical cornucopia could not have been forged. If you wanna find out what makes 'me', 'Angos Winke', tick, put on your very best ear buds, listen to and absorb this genius performance of great skill. It's like a draw of cocaine; Bon Voyage, Come back safely.
