Face to Face
Cleopatra Degher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dart hit the bull's eye
You're right here just how I wanted
Close for the first time
The first time
There's a speck of green
In your left eye I never noticed
Becoming my caffeine
My caffeine, my caffeine
Standing face to face
We could be anyplace
Standing face to face
Lost in our inner space
Face to face
People and jealousy
They try to spoil our peace
But they can't touch you and me
You and me
‘Cuz you and I align
Like the planets do sometimes
We don't hear their lies
Their lies
Standing face to face
We could be anyplace
Standing face to face
Lost in our inner space
Standing face to face
We could be anyplace
Standing face to face

Lost in our inner space
Face to face

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Cleopatra Degher describes a moment of intimacy between two people who are standing face to face. The dart has hit the bull's eye, which suggests that something has been achieved perfectly, or as desired. It is clear that the person in front of her is someone she has been longing to be close to, and now that they are face to face, she notices a speck of green in their left eye that she never noticed before. This is where the metaphor of the person becoming her caffeine comes in. Caffeine is something that is often regarded as essential in people's day-to-day lives, it's what wakes people up in the morning, kickstarts their day and helps them stay alert, focused and energized. The person in front of her, with their piercing gaze, is now the essential thing in her life that keeps her going, making her feel alert and energized.

The second half of the verse introduces the idea that outsiders, represented by the people and jealousy Cleopatra mentions, are trying to spoil their peace. However, she reassures the person in front of her that they don't need to worry about the lies being spread by others, because they align like planets do sometimes. This refers to the way that planets orbit the sun, staying in sync and moving together even though they are all different entities. It's a powerful metaphor for the kind of alignment two people can share, working together and staying in step as a unit, even when the rest of the world tries to pull them apart.
