When My Ship Comes In
Clint Black Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No sun on the Rockies, not even the light of day
I feel that old cabin fever coming on
But I know where I'll be when lady luck finally blows my way
She'll put the wind in my sails and I'll be gone
It won't be long before my ship comes in
Gonna sail right out of Colorado
Catch a ride on a warm trade wind to Puerta No-One-Knows
She'll find me waiting when my ship comes in
Gonna board and go whichever way the wind blows
I'll be off to find myself once again in Puerta No-One-Knows
When my ship comes in
Maybe I'm only dreaming but it sure seems real
Somehow the wind doesn't chill quite to the bone
Or could it just be the fever I'm running on an uneven keel
Not losing sight of why I'm up here alone
It won't be long before my ship comes in
She'll find me waiting when my ship comes in
It won't be long before my ship comes in

She'll find me waiting when my ship comes in
When my ship comes in

Overall Meaning

β€œWhen My Ship Comes In” is a romantic ballad by Clint Black that describes a man dreaming of leaving his rocky home and sailing to an unknown place where he hopes to find his true self. The first stanza of the song sets the tone of the feeling of isolation as the lyrics describe the lack of sunlight on the mountains, which gives the impression that the singer is sitting in a cold and dark place. We can sense cabin fever feeling creeping in, which is the feeling of restlessness accompanied by irritability, waiting for something to happen. However, the singer believes in his luck, and believes he knows where he will be when that luck finally blows his way. The lyrics express the hope and excitement that Lady Luck will put the wind in his sails and thus, he'll leave and sail far away from his current state to a new land.

In the following verses, the singer continues daydreaming and hoping for his luck to change. He is convinced that his fortune is about to turn, and he'll be boarding a ship to catch some warm winds to an exotic destination called Puerta No-One-Knows. As the song progresses, the lyrics transport the listener to an imagined paradise where the singer can find himself again. Finally, the song ends with the hope of finding a safe haven with Lady Luck on board, as she will take him wherever the wind blows.

I saw him in concert a few years back at one of the casinos near me. He pulled a cruel trick on us. He said the band wasn't able to make it and he didn't feel he could sing his hits without them. i'm thinking, "What?!" Then the lights went out and when they came on the full band was there and he started with "Summer's Coming" He sang all his hits including this one. What a way to put on a show.

I saw him in concert and he did the same but legit gave the band the "night off" they proceeded to rock for 2 hours just him and his guitar. Incredible talent.

Clint Black is one hell of a musician.

William McCloud

Agreed

Why can't country music still be like this?

Kyle Goodreau

@C.J. Davis exactly, easy $$$$ is all they see in fans these days

Mely Andrade

Because good music brings good people together, and good people together share good ideas, and good ideas start movements that change history. Music has been co-opted along with film to keep us surface level.

C.J. Davis

Why can't people who listen to country music from the 1980s-today realize how ridiculously lame and corny it is? Why can't they realize its just a bunch of millionaire metrosexuals singing rural nouns and adjectives who are pandering to people who are too stupid to figure that out?

L

Because its been infected with pop music. You can count on one hand how many legit country singers are left in the genre
