Creep
Clock Work Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

She's running out again,
She's running out
She's run run run run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo,
What the hell am I doing here?

I don't belong here.
I don't belong here.

Overall Meaning

Clock Work's song "Creep" tells the story of someone who feels unworthy and insecure in the presence of someone they greatly admire. The opening lines, "when you were here before, couldn't look you in the eye," convey how overwhelmed and nervous the singer is around their idol. They see the person as an angel and their beauty brings the singer to tears, highlighting the intensity of their admiration.

However, the singer is plagued with deep feelings of inadequacy, and although they wish they were special like their idol, they come to the realization that they are just a creep and a weirdo. It is evident that the singer is envious of the person's perfect body and soul and wants to have control over their own life in order to become like them. The desire to be noticed by the person and be special like them intensifies the singer's feelings of inadequacy and reinforces their negative self-image.

The repetition of the phrase "I don't belong here" at the end of each verse highlights the singer's struggle with belonging and feeling worthy of the person's attention. Ultimately, the singer recognizes that they cannot change who they are and that they do not belong in the presence of this individual. The song conveys the struggle of trying to fit in and be accepted by people who are perceived as being better than oneself.

Yep.

I posted this request to the 'Mandy' video:

Please - someone with the artistic talent - use 'Mandy' as the basis for a medley of 'Creep' and 'Mandy'. I've been hearing that in my head since 1975 - now someone with video editing can put that for all to see..

Thank you!!!

I love that they used the "Oh no you'll never get me up in one of these again ..." section as an intro for "Mandy Fly Me." One of the cleverest bands of their time (or maybe any time).

The Variation of tracks on this album are so wide. That's on of the things i loved about it, most groups sound pretty much the same all the time but 10cc were varied and unpredictable and took you to places no other bands could take you.
