Psychic Trauma
Cloud Nothings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'll never be here, it's hard to explain
Psychic trauma, returns with age
There's nothing new here, no room to relate
I don't know what you're trying to say

Try to stop it, try to feel something
But nothing happens, I stay the same
Is it alright to end up this way?
Life gets boring, it fades away

I can't believe that what you're telling me is true
My mind is always wasted listening to you

You'll never be here, it's hard to explain
Psychic trauma, returns with age
There's nothing new here, no room to relate
I don't know what you're trying to say

Try to stop it, try to feel something
But nothing happens, I stay the same
Is it alright to end up this way?
Life gets boring, it fades away

I can't believe that what you're telling me is true
My mind is always wasted listening to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song, "Psychic Trauma" by Cloud Nothings, touch on themes of isolation, frustration, and stagnation. The song is a commentary on the struggles of feeling misunderstood, disconnected from others, and trapped in a monotonous existence. The chorus of the song, "Psychic trauma, returns with age," highlights the idea of past traumas resurfacing and impacting one's present life. Throughout the song, the singer expresses an inability to connect with those around him, acknowledging that there's "nothing new here, no room to relate." The line "My mind is always wasted listening to you" highlights the singer's frustration with feeling unheard and unacknowledged.

The repeated phrase "Try to stop it, try to feel something, But nothing happens, I stay the same" suggests a sense of hopelessness and resignation. The singer wants to experience something new or meaningful, but can't seem to break free from their routine or find anything of real substance. The song seems to suggest that life can become dull and unfulfilling over time, as time passes, issues from the past can reemerge complicating things even further. The refrain "You'll never be here, it's hard to explain," underscores the singer's sense of disconnection from others, indicating that the people around them can't understand their perspective or experiences.

A co-worker told me to check out Cloud Nothings. I listened to the first CD, and thought it was pretty cool. They were a big part of the reason I decided to attend Riot Fest. They played this song in their set, and it got stuck in my head. It'll probably end up in my rotation. I want to listen to more, but it's a lot of material to take in, at once.

the drumming towards the end totally makes this song

the drummer is absolutely nuts live...Like giving it 1,000% when 99.8% is necessary. He truly gets rad. I also love his style; the way that he drums. It's different. Something about it. He's a killer though for sure. Love it. His name is Jayson Gerycz if I'm not mistaken. Was a true joy to watch him go HAM at the Black Cat recently.

Also, have you heard their most recent album (2020...? I think)? The first song has this crescendo of death and man, do the drums add to it so nicely. I like how he isn't, and the band for that matter, picks up the tempo and takes it down as necessary. It's like- before "beats per minute"(BPM, tempo etc), they have Rad Per Second setting for each segment. It's natural how it fluctuates and isn't always perfect. Speeds up, slows down, kind of like Hendrix and his epic drummer Mitch Mitchell. It's not a quantized grid.

Also shout out to Dylan Baldi (vox, guitar etc) for informing the audience that he was actually sick from food poisoning/bad food from a vegetarian restaurant nearby. I cannot fking imagine still guttural screaming with a nauseous stomach. True champ. I'd have never known based on the show they put on. Can you imagine how aggressively they play and just being like "ur on in 5" and you're nauseous? That's what I'm TALKING about, sir. Punk as fu*k. Show must go on...

One of the best drummers I've seen in my life. And I've seen a lot! Punk version of Pavement is a good qualification!

Dude, the man was warming up doing that super hard single stick drum roll. He's super creative and gave it like, everything he had. His snare tuning was odd to me- like, a sound hit softer you'd think the snares were off or something. But how he hits the drum so incredibly hard, live- it translates like a chef's kiss. I love Pavement by the way. The intro to "Grounded" kills me, how it rushes the snare fills. I've concluded it's 100% intentionally foreshadowing the tempo that the verse takes. What I mean is, the intro is maybe like 10 BPM slower than the verse and he's playing that RLRL snare fill at THAT tempo, but in the intro. Man, loveee it.
This is the currency of music imo. I turned on Psychic Trauma because it was in my head as I awoke, and happened to click the music vid, and now I'm spreading my cheer n' shi in the comments with like-minded people. Punkrock is Love.
