Clyde Beluga
Club Des Belugas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We take a half a shot of sweet vermouth
From Frank - it's his favorite
To that a half a shot for Peter
And you know, It's a Cointreau
We add another half of shot for Dean -
He likes amaretto
Gently pour the vodka in -
It's one and a half shots

A small dash of cassis for Sammy,
Two dashes of bitters for Joe,
A Clyde Beluga in your hand,
I'm gonna let you people know

Now using the glass
Half of the Boston Shaker
Don't use the other half,
It ruins the flavor
Fill it up with plenty of ice -
And stir to make it taste nice
Don't hurry the stirring
Through anticipation,
It must be stirred slowly
Over good conversation
And you really can't afford
To get it wrong,
You can drink it in a short glass,
Or even take it long

When you drink a Clyde Beluga
Please raise a glass for Frank

And always have another Clyde
When the first one has been drank

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Clyde Beluga by Club des Belugas describe a recipe for a drink named after the beloved African-American jazz saxophonist Clyde Barrow. The drink is a mix of different spirits and flavors, each of which is preferred by one of the members mentioned in the song. The recipe starts with Frank's favorite - sweet vermouth, followed by a shot of Cointreau for Peter. Dean likes Amaretto, so half a shot is added for him, and then vodka is poured in for 1.5 shots. A small dash of cassis is added for Sammy, and two dashes of bitters for Joe. The drink is to be served in a Clyde Beluga glass and stirred slowly over good conversation.

The lyrics of the song are an ode to the jazz age when music, drinks, and good conversation were the focal points of social gatherings. The name of the drink, Clyde Beluga, is a tribute to Clyde Barrow, who was known for his soulful music and energetic performances. The lyrics urge the listeners to enjoy the drink in the right way, with good company and unhurried stirring, and to raise a toast to Frank, the bartender who created the recipe.

Awesome! I heard a Club Des Beluga cd seven years ago when I was on holiday in Jersey, Channel Islands and have loved their stuff ever since.

This is one of my absolute favourites. Shame there's not a pukka video with it.
