One of the great groups ever! Moore, an incredible singer in own right, also sang backup for the original Drifters with Clyde McPhatter.
McPhatter’s group might be the most talented group I ever heard. McPhatter was an incredible lead. They also had a second lead whose name escapes me, who was every bit as good as McPhatter. He sang lead on a fabulous song called Promise To Be Mine, among others.

Barry Anthony Fagen beat decades of artists cover versions with his. And also added his dry ironic flare. While the original and other covers sound like a by the numbers love song, Fagen managed to make his sound like an obsessive ode to a prostitute. Even with the same lyrics..great musician

Howard Spiegel: "White Christmas" was recorded in 1954 by the "first" lineup of The Drifters with Bill Pinkney singing lead. By the time they recorded "Ruby Baby", there had been many personnel changes in the group. I believe Johnny Moore is singing lead on "Ruby Baby", one of many lead singers for The Drifters.

The Drifters went through several lineups. Clyde McPhatter was the original lead but he was drafted and when he got back home ,he went solo. Ruby Baby was written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller as well as There Goes My Baby. Been E. King was probably the best lead, but was canned because of a dispute with the record company. The Drifters that did Under The Boardwalk and Upon The Roof had Johnny Moore do the vocals. His death shortly after put an end to the Drifters 15 year career. At one time, there were 2 different lineups performing at the same time. Lieber and Stoller we're 2 white guys that wrote hits for several Black artists and most of Elvis' early hits.

You are incorrect the vocalist who died was in that era was Rudy Lewis. Your second error is your judgement of best lead singer of the Drifters that conversation usually involves three singers Clyde Rudy and Johnny. The latter two more than Clyde.
