Beautiful Boyz
CocoRosie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those, those beautiful boys
Those, those beautiful boys

Cocorosie :
Born illegitimately
To a whore, most likely
He became an orphan
Oh what a lovely orphan he was
Sent to the reformatory
Ten years old, was his first glory
Got caught stealing from a nun
Now his love story had begun

Thirty years he spent wandering
A devil's child with dove wings
He went to prison
In every country he set foot in
Oh how he loved prison
How awfully lovely was prison

Antony :
All those beautiful boys
Pimps and queens and criminal queers
All those beautiful boys
Tattoos of ships and tattoos of tears

Cocorosie :
His greatest love was executed
The pure romance was undisputed
Angelic hoodlums and holy ones
Angelic hoodlums and holy ones

Antony :
All those beautiful boys
Pimps and queens and criminal queers
All those beautiful boys
Tattoos of ships and tattoos of tears

All those beautiful boys
Pimps and queens and criminal queers
All those beautiful boys
Tattoos of ships and tattoos of tears

All those beautiful boys
Beautiful boys...
All those beautiful boys
Beautiful boys...

Those beautiful boys...

Overall Meaning

The song "Beautiful Boyz" by CocoRosie featuring Antony is a haunting and melancholic ode to the lives and deaths of queer men who were stigmatized and persecuted for their gender expression and sexual orientation. The song begins with the refrain "Those beautiful boys" that repeats itself throughout the song, serving as a haunting tribute and lament to the memory and legacy of those who lived and died fighting for their identities and desires.

The lyrics of the song paint a vivid picture of one such beautiful boy, who was born to a sex worker, became an orphan and was sent to a reformatory at ten years old. His first taste of glory came when he was caught stealing from a nun, and his love story began from there. He spent thirty years wandering from one country to the other, becoming a devil's child with dove wings. The song takes on a melancholic tone as it speaks of his greatest love being executed and how the pure romance was undisputed. The baroque pop sound of the song creates an almost operatic storytelling experience that speaks in equal parts to sorrow and empathy for the plight of queer men and women.

The collaboration between CocoRosie and Antony is a powerful one, with Antony's voice adding a depth of emotional gravitas that highlights the beauty and tragedy of the song's lyrics. Ultimately "Beautiful Boyz" is a song about queerness, love, loss, and the power of memory and imagination to transcend death and distance.

For anyone lookig for meaning of this i found online-
"Quite obviously about Jean Genet (as many people have already pointed out). Famous for his memoirs, his criminal convictions, political efforts and friendship with Picasso.

His mother was a prostitute who put him up for adoption. He spent time with a few families and began a long habbit of petty theft. He spent many years in and out of prison, was thrown out of the Foreign Legion for homosexual acts but eventually his writing was recognized and he was spared a long sentence when some notable figures (such as Picasso) appealed on his behalf and he never set foot in prison again.

The mention of his greatest love being executed is slightly off in that he fell in love with a tight rope walker of all things who commited suicide.

The "tattoos and ships and tattoos of tears" is of course a reference to well known, almost traditional prison tattoos. I almost gagged when I saw that someone posted a comment here suggesting the tear tattoos were "emo" related. Really? Couldn't possibly be the well known tradition of a tear drop tattoo representing one murder."
