Read Full Bio ↴Coda Chroma is the alias of prolific Ballarat-based musician Kate Lucas.
Her songs are drawn from personal dreamscapes and real life encounters, delivering poetic honesty, nostalgia & exploration in equal measure. Working closely with producer Damien Charles, Coda Chroma creates otherworldly arrangements and expansive musical landscapes.
In 2017 Coda Chroma invited us into her kaleidoscopic world with the release of her debut self titled album, which was added to rotation on Double J and nominated for an Age Music Victoria award.
Coda Chroma released her second album Inside The Still Life in 2019. Considered a major progression from the debut album, the album’s pop sensibility only partially disguises a more intense, brooding, and cheekily existential underbelly. Coda Chroma toured the album nationally, including a run of Woodford Folk Festival shows, and Melbourne’s PBS FM named Inside the Still Life in their top ten records of 2019.

I sift through the fog 'til I'm awake
That dream I had is gonna be hard to shake
It sits on my shoulder like a big ol' bird of prey
And I think it's a sign
That I need holiday, I have over-stayed
For the sake of my mind
I had a chance to win
If I'd have played it straight
But long suffering seems to be my forte
And I've made up my mind
I wanna holiday, I have over-stayed
Everything would be fine
If I had a holiday, gotta go today
'Cause I feel like I'm dying
And I think it's a sign that
I need holiday, I have over-stayed
And I've made up my mind
I wanna holiday, better save my pay
'Cause I feel like it's time
I got to get away, I'm going crazy
For the sake of my mind
The lyrics to Coda Chroma's song "Holiday" depict the singer's desire to take a break from their overwhelming life. The lyrics capture the singer's feeling of weariness and dread as they navigate through their daily routine. They are haunted by a dream that they cannot shake and feel the weight of their responsibilities and long-suffering tendencies. The lyrics suggest that the singer realizes the importance of taking care of their mental health and that they need to take a break from their routine in order to recharge their batteries.
The phrase "big ol' bird of prey" in the first verse is a metaphor for the singer's problems and worries. Just as a bird of prey sits on its perch and watches its prey before swooping in for the kill, the singer's challenges loom above them, ready to strike. The singer acknowledges the warning signs from their subconscious and accepts that they need a break from their responsibilities. The phrase "For the sake of my mind" in the chorus highlights the importance of mental health and self-care.
Overall, the lyrics to "Holiday" paint a picture of a person who has been running on autopilot for too long and needs to take a step back to reevaluate their priorities. The song serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care and taking breaks from the demands of everyday life.
