D
Codeine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

D for effort
D for intent
D because you pay the rent

D for love
D for insight
D because you're heaven sent
I want you to need me - not to feed me
I want you to need me - not to feed me

D for dishes
F for floors
Can't make the grade anymore

D for love
D for intent
D because you pay the rent

You kick my head
Lying on your ten - your ten foot bed
You say you're all alone, that's just 'cause, you don't want anybody home

See a smile, make it sad
Take it all so bad.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Codeine's song D seem to be about someone struggling to meet the expectations of their partner or loved one. The "D" in the lyrics seems to stand for "effort, intent, love, insight, or doing the bare minimum to pay the rent" for someone else. The singer wants their loved one to need them for emotional fulfillment, rather than just physical or practical support. Despite their efforts, the singer can't seem to keep up with the expectations of their loved one, as they receive a "D" for their efforts in doing the dishes or cleaning the floors.

The lyrics also contain some introspection on the part of the singer, as they recognize that their loved one is pushing them away and they feel alone. The line "You kick my head, lying on your ten - your ten foot bed" seems to indicate that the singer feels physically and emotionally rejected. The lyrics "See a smile, make it sad, take it all so bad" suggest that the singer takes their loved one's criticisms and expectations very seriously, and it affects them deeply.

This album came out when I was 22 and, I can say without hyperbole, changed my life.

I remember that i was depressive all the time in between the age of 15 until 22. I remember that i was listening to this song with my feet in the cold and wet grass looking for nowhere.

@owennbeats

@owenn4000 beats work on yourself to improve your mental state to a point where you feel better with yourself in life.

The day you wake up with rays of sun bouncing off your eyes and you can smell the grass outside without having to feel the weight of depression on your shoulders is the day I strive to experience.

I’m in the same position right now

I listened to this so much age 17 into 18 / senior yr of HS when there was a lot of tension between me & my parents due to my severe depression causing me not to make decent grades or fulfill the things that they expected of me, and I always imagine the lyrics being me talking to them. I eventually left unannounced on my 18th bday and stopped going to school / didnt graduate... it's crazy to think I was at such a low point at such a young age! My circumstances still suck, but I've learned to be grateful which has changed my perspective. I have wasted so much time tho I just wanna be healthy already.

@45sig220

their song "Tom" played on one of my Pandora stations. Never heard of them or "slowcore" before, but this is great stuff! Thanks for posting!
