They are so worried about revenue raising and filling the prisons with petty criminals/addicts that the real monsters often fall through the cracks. In my State its not uncommon for someone to get more time for their 3rd DUI than a sex crime. No way molesters should be getting 2-5s along with alcoholics.

Unfortunately, some women prioritize men over children they should be protecting. My best friend growing up was the youngest of three girls. She was attacked her stepfather when we were thirteen years old. Luckily, she managed to get away before he could rape her.

It came out later that he'd begun grooming her eldest sister almost immediately after marrying their mother, eventually sexually abusing her for years until she left home contentiously at age sixteen to escape him. The middle daughter would never answer questions about whether he'd abused her, which to me was always answer enough on its own.

Their mother stayed with him, even after DCS mandated that he not be allowed to live in the same house as either of the still underage girls. Years later, SHE BROUGHT HIM AS HER PLUS ONE TO MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.

My mother's childhood best friend was also abused by not one, but TWO stepfathers. Her mother did not leave either of them upon finding out, but instead blamed her own daughter for the abuse.

I often wonder if criminals, especially murderers, feel terrified now that law enforcement uses DNA & familial DNA to solve cold cases. I'm sure there's a lot of them out there that got away back then before DNA. And now that they're much older, they could still get caught & end up spending their so-called 'golden years' in prison.

Yes, and this June, the board determined that he could be released again. However, his release has been put on hold pending review. His sentence was reduced from the original sentence for "good behavior" . That seems ridiculous since there are no young girls in prison to tempt him into "bad behavior". Isn't that obvious?

The Australian justice system isn't any better, life should be life. The yanks do that better than us. We had a serial killer from Melbourne seriously considered for parole not long ago, he killed 4 or 5 women as a very young adult, he's in his 40s now, still capable of heinous things. If there's any chance they could commit crimes again they shouldn't be let out, killing someone in cold blood should stop you from living in society.

Like others have said, only if the investigators preserved evidence at all and properly, some cases were solved only due to that one detective that wouldn't let the evidence room throw away evidence. Comes to mind the cars where the guy put women in a refrigerator and then years later after he the detective fought tooth and nail to keep that fridge ,and they finally were able to use the slightest amount of DNA, blood .Anyway they finally caught the guy. I can't remember the other details or majority of them...

I agree it reminds me of the movie with Tom Hanks, the green mile. The angel that came down said clear as day when he touched the perpetrator that raped and killed the two young girls. “ you used their love to kill them.” Shortly after a dark curse is unleashed and a random guard absorbs it immediately murdering the criminal who used the two little girls love against each other to then orchestrate their death. It doesn’t get any lower than that, word to the wise.

The part where the narrator says you have to wait 24 hrs to file missing person report is wrong. If anyone ever tells you theres a waiting period before filing do not listen to them, including law enforcement. Demand, tell them youre not leaving, make a scene whatever it takes to get them to take you seriously. If you know they arent the type to disappear without telling someone demand to speak with detectives in charge of missing persons. I repeat, there is no law or rule that you have to wait any length of time to file missing person. Waiting seals the fate of the truly missing.

I believe that a 24 hour wait period was common for many states back in the 70s, 80s, 90s. Running away was the first and common thought. So while, thankfully, 24 hours is no longer the rule, sadly it was for many.

I believe it arose from lazy cops not wanting to look for people that are often not really missing but haven't communicated that they're going anywhere, like run aways. I understand that position, however, do you have any idea how many people get reported missing each year and just come back the next few days, having been on a bender, having had to travel with short notice, just forgetting to inform someone, just wanting to get away for a few days...?

The problem is that the amount of work and money it would cost, isn't manageable and that for like one case out of a few hundred. You can't pin a number on someone's life, but you also can't give infinite money to the coppers.

There is no time limit you have to wait to call in someone missing. Maybe there was a time police departments could make it part of their operations but I know other murders around the same time or earlier police didn’t wait. Unfortunately movies, TV, books, or just believe if told by friend/family. I wish every true crime show or podcast put that info up at the beginning of each episode about true crime. Most ppl do know the first 24-48 hours are crucial.Because people usually call everyone the missing person knows looking for them first. It’s when memories are most reliable for one, or may still find the person alive.

As far as funding, police have so much they’re looking for new things to buy. Small cities of 200 thousand people, some of their towns have tanks. It’s all about the toys. Police just used to have one belt with a few pockets. Now their vests have tons of stuff in them. Small town police cars can afford custom The Punisher logos painted on their cars. The money is there, it’s just what they choose to spend it on unfortunately. And that comes from multiple police officers and administration personally. And then I hear budget numbers. I think you can get most of that online. It’s too bad dispersing money to more or new staff or just train some cops to deal with certain situations (mental crisis, drugged out, domestic violence etc)has the worst slogan. Imo, the whole 24 hours time frame is way too long and just jeopardizes missing people, but I know way too many people argue against doing away with that time frame. It should really be decided on a case-by-case basis.

I feel like a good middle ground would be checking the victim’s text history with a close loved one and their employment/school attendance. If the victim is known to text and update super often and are super punctual to their work/school, then the 24 hours should be ignored or lessened. If the victim is known to go no contact or misses work/school often, then the 24 hour period could be honored. And of course, if the missing person is a minor, the time frame should just be ignored regardless. Way too many missing children and teens are written off as runaways which has caused way too many tragedies.

actually, it was a case I listen to recently about this mentally retarded man and he was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, and he eventually died. Before finding out he was innocent, and the police force was so crooked by forcing him to admit to something when he could only understand yes or no questions. It's the main reason I am against the death sentence, too many cases presented as "easy, we even got the confession", that turned out to be lazy or crooked cops pinning everything on the first person they could construct a case against.

Recently even read about a guy who was innocent in prison, got out and then killed by a cop during a traffic stop, while he was still suing over his wrongful imprisonment.

Juli Busken was couple of years behind me at Benton High School. I was class of '91 she was class of '93. There is an amphitheater dedicated to her at Tindall Park here in Benton, Ar. I found, "The police’s theory was that Anthony had been out on December 20, stealing Christmas presents from random cars. Juli had returned home from dropping her friend off at the airport, and Anthony saw her. Juli was abducted at gun point, and directed to drive to the lake. Waiting before reporting a missing person is COSTLY. There are so many people that could have been saved if they started looking immediately. Sexual assaults and murder is on the rise world wide, people seem to be with out a conscience. Awareness of things going on is half the battle, many lives have been saved when predictors are stopped by the intervention of alert bystanders.
