Too Young
Cole Nat King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They try to tell us we're too young
Too young to really be in love
They say that love's a word
A word we've only heard
But can't begin to know the meaning of

And yet we're not too young to know
This love will last though years may go
And then some day they may recall
We were not too young at all

And yet we're not too young to know
This love will last though years may go

And then some day they may recall
We were not too young at all

Overall Meaning

In Cole Nat King And His Trio's song "Too Young," the lyrics beautifully capture the experience of a couple who are deeply in love but are being judged for being too young to feel such strong emotions. The singer acknowledges that people tell them they are "too young to really be in love" and that love is just a word they have heard but do not yet comprehend. Despite this, the singer insists that their love is real and will endure the test of time.

The lyrics go on to explain how even though they may be young, they are not too young to understand that their love will last, even as the years go by. The singer reflects that someday, people may look back and understand that they were not too young to feel what they felt, and that their love was genuine.

The song's message is one that speaks to people of all ages, as we have all experienced situations where others have judged us for our feelings or life choices. The lyrics of "Too Young" remind us that love knows no boundaries, including age, and that true love can be felt at any stage of life.

My Dad passed away a couple of hours ago. He loved singing this song to my Mom. When he passed he was listening to this song with one ear Bud in his ear and the other in my Mom’s ear. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary in November. I know he is now at peace.❤️✝️

My Dad used to sing this too. I thought of it tonight, all those years ago. Feeling very sentimental, I came to hear Nat sing it.

I'm playing this to my mum right now who is in hospice care. She married at 16 to my dad who passed 10years ago.

I was 13 in 1953 and my husband was 16. The community pool was two blocks from my house. Richard was a lifeguard and I would go and twirl around in the water and look at him with stars in my eyes. To him, I was just a pesky kid BUT we started dating occasionally when I was 17. We were married in June 1959 and celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. He is 85 and I am 82, and because he is seriously ill, we may not see our 64th anniversary. It's been wonderful to share this journey that we call life together ❤️. Nat King Cole and Perry Como are our favorite singers of all time!

This song was my late Mom and Dad's love (theme) song because they were "too young" to fall in love with each other. They were married 50 years (living) and passed away for 13 years now. Yet, each time I hear this song, it reminds me of how long they turned their trials and battles into triumphs for over 50 years! Thank you for sharing this song.

@hyeguy36

One of the finest singers of all time. Nobody today has the voice quality that Nat possessed. Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a television variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death from lung cancer in February 1965.

and the poor guy was literally taxed and over-taxed to death and beyond...he was a National Treasure.
