Yesterdays
Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was young

I'd listened to the radio

Waitin' for my favorite songs

Waiting they played I'd sing along
It made me smile

Those were such happy times

And not so long ago

How I wondered where they'd gone

But they're back again

Just like a long lost friend

All the songs I loved so well

(*) every sha-la-la-la

Every wo-wo-wo

Still shines

Every shing-a-ling-a-ling

That they're starting to sing's

So fine

When they get to the part

Where he's breakin' her heart

It can really make me cry

Just like before

It's yesterday once more

Lookin' back on how it was

In years gone by

And the good times that I had

Makes today seem rather sad

So much has changed

It was songs of love that

I would sing to then

And I'd memorize each word

Those old melodies

Still sound so good to me

As they melt the years away

Repeat (*)

All my best memories

Come back clearly to me

Some can even make me cry

Just like before

It's yesterday once more

Overall Meaning

The song "Yesterday" by Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra talks about the power of music to take us back to some of our happiest memories. The song expresses how the artist used to listen to the radio in their youth, waiting for their favourite songs to play so that they can sing along. This feeling of nostalgia is embraced throughout the song, as the artist reminisces about how the happy times of their past have gone but have come back again. They are reminded of how much has changed over the years, but the memories of the songs of love they used to sing along to still sound just as great today as they did back then.

The lyrics of the song evoke a strong sense of memory, taking the listener on a trip down memory lane to relive their past. The song is particularly powerful because of how it highlights the emotional benefits of music. It reminds us that music has the power to heal and help us through difficult times, and how it has the ability to make us appreciate the good times that we have experienced even more. The song encourages us to cherish the memories of the past, to hold onto them so that we can revisit them from time to time, and to let the music of our youth continue to shine on.

Incredible version, for me the greatest ever !

Back in the mid '60s, my brother and I walked down the steps to the Village Gate ( or was it the Village Vanguard?) and we really lucked out: A two setter with John Coltrane and Colman Hawkins. Hawkins played "Yesterdays" with such melancholic soul. It was so memorable, in a slow mournful tempo, nothing like this one. Coltrane was memorable, too, but what sticks to my mind was "Yesterdays." Was he remembering Billie? Who knows. Only the Hawk knew and he soared to high heavens.
