Never Gonna Happen
Colette Carr Lyrics

Ooh whoo ooh
You hang up, I call back, I think that, it's never gonna happen
I give up, you call back, we're on tracks and never gonna happen
Seems to always end up to be the same
No matter who's fault I take the blame,
When these hands shake like palm 08,
'Cause no matter how much we attempt a change,
It always tends up to end up this way,
When you're in the wrong and I say I'm sorry,
Then I stay out late and you never worry.
Headed straight back to the same zone
Sick of that song that I hate on your ring tone,
Hearing it play all the way through,
'Cause you never pick up when I'm in this mood and,
You knew, I knew, we're doomed,
But not through, no matter how hard we,
Try to it's never gonna happen is it?
You hang up, I call back, I think that it's never gonna happen
I give up, you call back, we're on tracks and never gonna happen
Ooh whoo ooh, it's never gonna happen
Ooh whoo ooh, it's never gonna happen
Can't stop at a dead end,
Unless you don't wanna keep going,
U-turn then you turn back
Then you walk past like you don't know me,
Call back when you get lonely,
That's what we always do,
You only pull me in when I try and get rid of you.
You hang up, I call back, I think that it's never gonna happen
I give up, you call back, we're on tracks and never gonna happen
Headed straight back to the same zone
Sick of that song that I hate on your ring tone,
Hearing it play all the way through,
'Cause you never pick up when I'm in this mood and,
You knew, I knew, we're doomed,
But not through, no matter how hard we,
Try to it's never gonna happen is it? (is it?)
(never gonna happen is it, is it, is it?)
The lyrics of Colette Carr's song Never Gonna Happen talk about a relationship that is stuck in a constant cyclical pattern of break up and make up. The song opens with the lines "You hang up, I call back, I think that it's never gonna happen. I give up, you call back, we're on tracks and never gonna happen", which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The couple tries to change things but ends up in the same situation every time. As a result, Carr sings "When these hands shake like palm 08, 'Cause no matter how much we attempt a change, It always tends up to end up this way."
The lyrics hint towards the frustration they're experiencing by saying "Sick of that song that I hate on your ring tone, Hearing it play all the way through, 'Cause you never pick up when I'm in this mood and, You knew, I knew, we're doomed." The song comes to its conclusion, highlighting the fact that the relationship has come to a dead end, saying "Can't stop at a dead end, Unless you don't wanna keep going, U-turn then you turn back Then you walk past like you don't know me." Overall, the song's lyrics describe a relationship that's caught in a vicious cycle of fighting and making up.
Line by Line Meaning
You hang up, I call back, I think that, it's never gonna happen
We keep repeating this pattern of you hanging up and me calling back and I feel like what we want is never going to happen.
I give up, you call back, we're on tracks and never gonna happen
Even when I give up on us, you call back and we fall into the same old routine and we both know that what we want is never going to happen.
Seems to always end up to be the same
Our relationship keeps falling into the same pattern over and over again.
No matter who's fault I take the blame,
Regardless of who's at fault, I always take the blame for our problems.
And you say it's okay but it's not okay
You tell me it's okay, but deep down we both know it's not okay.
When these hands shake like palm 08,
When I get really anxious and my hands start shaking uncontrollably like they did in 2008.
'Cause no matter how much we attempt a change,
No matter how hard we try to change things, it always ends up the same way.
It always tends up to end up this way,
Our relationship always ends up falling into the same pattern.
When you're in the wrong and I say I'm sorry,
When you mess up and I apologize.
Then I stay out late and you never worry.
But then I stay out late and you don't seem to care about where I am.
Headed straight back to the same zone
Our relationship always goes back to the same old problems.
Sick of that song that I hate on your ring tone,
I'm tired of hearing that song that I can't stand every time you call.
Hearing it play all the way through,
You never pick up when I want to talk and I have to listen to the song play all the way through.
'Cause you never pick up when I'm in this mood and,
You never answer when I'm upset and need to talk.
You knew, I knew, we're doomed,
We both know that our relationship is never going to work out.
But not through, no matter how hard we,
But we keep trying to make it work, even though we both know it won't.
Can't stop at a dead end,
We can't keep trying to make things work when we've reached a dead end.
Unless you don't wanna keep going,
Unless one of us no longer wants to continue this pattern.
U-turn then you turn back
We keep doing U-turns and going back to the same old problems.
Then you walk past like you don't know me,
After all of this, you just walk past me like we never even knew each other.
Call back when you get lonely,
But then you call me up again when you're lonely.
That's what we always do,
This is a cycle that we always find ourselves in.
You only pull me in when I try and get rid of you.
You only seem to want me when I'm trying to end things.
(never gonna happen is it, is it, is it?)
We both know it's never going to happen between us, no matter how hard we try.
