Epilogue
Colm Wilkinson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Monsieur, I bless your name
I am ready Fantine!
Monsieur, lay down your burden
At the end of my days
You've raised my child with love
She's the best of my life
And you will be with God
Papa, papa, I do not understand
Are you all right?
Why did you go away

Cosette, my child
Am I forgiven now?
Thank god, thank god
I've lived to see this day

It's you who must forgive a thoughtless fool
It's you who must forgive a thankless man
It's thanks to you that I am living
And again I lay down my life at your feet
Cosette, your father is a saint
When they wounded me
He took me from the barricade
Carried like a babe
And brought me home
To you

Now you are here
Again beside me
Now I can die in peace
For now my life is blessed

You will live, Papa, you're going to live
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye!

Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die
I'll obey
I will try

On this page
I write my last confession
Read it well when I, at last, am sleeping
It's the story
Of one who turned from hating
The man who only learned to love
When you were in his keeping

Come with me
Where chains will never bind you
All your grief
At last, at last behind you
Lord in Heaven
Look down on him in mercy

Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory

Take my hand
I'll lead you to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God

Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of the people
Who are climbing to the light

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
and the sun will rise

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord
We will walk behind the plowshare
We will put away the sword
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!

Ah!
Ah!

Ah!
Tomorrow comes!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Colm Wilkinson's song "Epilogue" depict a powerful and emotional exchange between two characters: Fantine and Jean Valjean. Fantine, who is dying, expresses her gratitude to Valjean for raising her daughter Cosette with love and care. She blesses his name and assures him that he will be with God. Valjean, in turn, asks for forgiveness and expresses his relief and gratitude for being able to witness this moment. He acknowledges his past mistakes and credits Cosette for helping him learn to love. Valjean and Cosette find solace in being reunited, and Valjean reassures her that he will try his best to live.

In the second part of the song, Valjean writes his final confession, recounting his transformation from a man filled with hatred to one who learned to love when Cosette came into his life. He asks for forgiveness from God and hopes to be taken to glory. Valjean then sings about leading Cosette to salvation and eternal love, emphasizing that to love another person is to see the face of God. The song concludes with a reprise of "Do You Hear the People Sing?", symbolizing hope, freedom, and the strength of the people to fight for a better future.

The song "Epilogue" holds immense emotional weight and serves as a culmination of the characters' journeys and the themes of love, redemption, and the pursuit of justice in Les Misérables.

@jolymac

There have been other Valjeans but no one can hold a candle to Colm Wilkinson. His brilliance is unmatched.

@ilsaruthen5478

Alfie Boe gives him a pretty good run for his money.

@dorothymiskovic7202

@Ilsa Ruthen or ramin

@ilsaruthen5478

@Dorothy Miskovic I have a hard time seeing Ramin as anyone other than Enjolras. He plays him so well I compare everyone else to him.

@christinewallis5930

There was only ever one Jean Valjean. Colm Wilkinson’s performance is beyond compare.

@myronlarimer1943

Alfie Boe was too concerned with showing off his voice, rather than allowing his voice to become Valjean. Colm becomes Valjean physically, emotionally and spiritually.
