Originally rising to fame as lead singer in the Christian rock band, Messenger, formed in 2010, he became a favorite during the early auditions of American Idol. Dixon auditioned in the tenth season, along with his sister Schyler, at the Nashville auditions. However, neither of them ended up in the Top 24. After he was sent home, Dixon performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 3, 2011.

Dixon returned in season 11, however he did not plan to audition, initially planning to merely accompany his sister Schyler to her audition. The judges implored Dixon to audition as well, where he sang David Cook's "Permanent". Both he and Schyler were awarded golden tickets. Schyler was cut yet again during the Las Vegas round, which brought him to tears.

On February 23, 2012, Dixon was placed in the season 11 Top 25. In the semi-finals, he performed Paramore's "Decode". He was one of the top five male vote getters and advanced into the Top 13.

This song is very special to me! I was going thorough a very rough patch: I had gotten into a new church, was asked to be a kids minister, I had just lost my job and was doubting a lot of things. While in church that day my pastor said "we need to listen to those voices in our heads, the ones saying little things, that could be God whispering to you"... of course the message was lots more involved but after the service I got my kid went out to my car and sat down turning on the radio saying "okay God where do you want me to start?" and this song came on. 4 years later I am happy to say that I was the kids pastor for 3 years until a recent job had me starting to work on Sundays....It was the hardest thing to take that job and tell my pastor I can no longer do the kids ministry. My now 13 year old son won't let me change the radio station from KLOVE. Sorry that was longer then anticipated!!

I grew up with this song and different parts of it hit me every time I’ve listened throughout the years. But my favorite is when he accepts the helmet... and then shares it. It is a powerful image that impacts my Spirit as if I were being saved all over again. Thank you for this stunning production. Absolutely beautiful.💕🙌🏽

I was baptized yesterday, as was my husband. It was AMAZING! We had a full immersion. This song played at the service prior to our baptism. Our three kids got to watch us. It was the most amazing experience!

I saw Colton in concert at WinterJam 2014 and it was amazing! I have loved him ever since! And then I got to meet him at a basketball game because I know he was one of the mascots. If you see this Colton, I love you and thank you for talking to me!

I am not a native english speaker person, at first i couldnt understand how beautiful the lyrics are because i couldnt realize that this was a christian song, since then i been learning english even thought i couldnt understand a word of this song this song has always made me happy when i was feeling sad with my life with myself, now when i am happy or when i am sad i come to this place and i listen to this song, i am happy now because in my life there has been so many changes that are good for me god knows that i choose more of him less of me, for me this is the most beautiful song, god made this song for us to make us happy to help us keep going, i can feel god`s presence when i am listening to this song.

This video is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Colton is a big inspiration for millions of people, including me. At first I didn't understand the video but the second time I watched it I understood it, the boy found something good, then his castle fell and he went underwater and found something better. There are better things in life then what you are focused on at the moment like TV, there are better things (if that makes sense)

My depression was so bad because I was trying to please the world and not God. But this song helped me realize God is who I live for not me or anyone else. Please Lord take all of me. If anyone sees this I need prayer to stay strong. Depression is so hard to battle. But I know God can get me through this.

I love this song, Colton Dixon. Thank you for it. When I first heard this song, I was in the deep throws of depression, and let's just say that it wasn't a good time for me. Than, my little Brother and I were messing with the radio and heard this song and we paused it for just a moment. It really helped, and I actually started crying. My brother was joyful, and estatic. Since than, he and I listen to it whenever we can, because it is simply a beautiful song. Thank you, ever so much. God Bless You, and please continue your wonderous song making!
