I thought about this a lot myself, because I was thinking about how I can do a few accents but how switching between them feels incredibly difficult without "cleansing my palette" of it so to speak. I think he uses those phrases as sort of a self-induced Pavlovian trick to help him segue between accents seamlessly. Musicians do the same thing between pieces pretty frequently. Pay attention to the noodling the instrumentalists in a band do between pieces, they are basically doing the musical version of this.

Those little phrases are actually his "way in" to the accents. He's giving us his secret out in the open. You hear actors talk about how they find their character or accent, and it's always one little thing that sparks them to understanding that accent or character - these are Fred's "little things" that allowed him to find his way into those accents. And the beauty is: he doesn't have to say anything more than those little things to get the point across.

I’ll tell you why. He’s unbelievably funny and smart; but he’s hard to cast into a role that captures that. Another example of this is Mitch Hedberg. Think of a role in a movie where his genius could be truly represented.

Its true, the difference between SC and NC’s accents! My dad’s NC accent has a little more bite. More podunk. A lot of SC has more of a proper Aristocratic accent. Governor McMaster is a good example.

I too agree it didn't seem like it but now that I have lived in another state for 8 years I can definitely tell. Luckily I myself have no accent as I haven't lived in any place long enough to pick one up. People can NEVER guess where I am from because of my lack of an accent.

Oh, I am pretty familiar, for an American anyway. The variety in Britain is beyond belief. Some are next to impossible to understand. I saw a video clip recently of a Scottish MP speaking in Parliament and he was repeatedly interrupted because no one present could understand what he was saying! It was hilarious. They finally agreed that his main points would be put into writing later so everyone could consider them, which only made it funnier.

That’s so interesting. I’ve always thought of the Vermont accent as dropping the T rather than enunciating it more. Like I pronounce it like Vermonh with like a Bostonian ending of the word. There is something specific going on with the T’s and D’s though.. by all accounts the rest of the states seem fairly accurate to me.

Not really. His 'Mexican' sounded more like rolos from Colombia, and his 'Cuban's' b 's were too hard. Cubans don't pronounce Cubans as 'Cu-ba-no.' They pronounce it: 'cu-an-oj'

This (like UK accent comparisons) is so interesting for Aussies because we sound almost indiscernible across completely different sides of the country - accent is more rural vs city and then in the city alters a bit with more "Bogan" twang in lower socio economic status/class vs a little bit of British intonation amongst some of the rich if they live in typical "rich" suburbs

Similar to how Tom Hanks recently did a near-perfect Australian accent on SNL... he had been spending time in Australia. Fred literally tours the entire of North America, so he's had a lot of time to absorb the various accents. Then you just need a way to recall them all... and he uses my technique of picturing how somebody from that area would say the name of where they live. Also years on SNL will make you very good.

I love the specific accents throughout our country. I grew up in a small mill town in eastern Connecticut. @Adam F. pretty accurate ngl, and they all skate. Ive been hanging out with a ton of ppl at bonfires at ocean beach and I can't tell you the number of times I've heard the phrase "dude, we just bombed this epic hill, it was hella tight"

I only lived there for two years but when he did that I got transported like that scene in Ratatouille. Most people I met were from somewhere else but San Francisco native dudes were always obvious. Skinny and angry is what I remember most.

I lived in Houston for 6 years. I didn't realize there was a Houston specific accent and then he did it and my ears just had this primal reaction. Like I was listening to a family member

The accents had me laughing. I went to Florida and they already knew that I was from Brooklyn NY. Also when I went to Canada one person said to me "Are u from NYC" and I'm like shit how they know 🤣.

The accent's not bad, but the tone is all wrong. Houston is the most laid back place - we're a crawfish boil on the porch in the Spring and barbecue on the lawn in the Fall town.

Dallas and Austin are the snooty opinionated cities.

As a Texan from Austin with relatives from Dallas and Houston, I can absolutely confirm that those accents are accurate. Not all of us, but it's definitely there.
