Originally from Detroit, Michigan, the six original members were Keith Staten, Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Karl Reid, Michael Brooks, and Michael Williams. In 1991 Staten and Brooks left the group and were replaced by Marvin Sapp, Maxx Frank, and Eddie Howard, Jr.. By 1994 Howard had left the group and Williams left a year later. Hammond also left to pursue a career with the group Radical For Christ. He was replaced by Montrell Darrett. By 2000, Marcus Cole and Chris Poole had taken the place of Sapp and Darrett on the group's last studio album. In 2002 Commissioned released a reunion album which brought back most of the group's former members and featured most of its greatest hits. The group performed live on stage during the 2002 Stellar Awards in Atlanta, Georgia.
(2) An urban Black gospel band with crossover appeal, Commissioned are an extremely evangelistic group in concert who put on such a dramatic show that the altars are routinely packed with repenters following their performances. Members Fred Hammond, Keith Staten, Michael Brooks and Marvin Sapp have all done many successful solo projects as well. They spent most of the '90s pursuing those careers, but found themselves back together in 2001 for a reunion tour and the first of another successful series of albums. ~ Bil Carpenter, Rovi
Who Do Men Say I Am
Commissioned Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Jesus looked @ his disciples with loving eyes, to see to them who could he be.
Some say thou art elias
Some are saying a major prophet from on high.
Whom
do men say that i am?
The lyrics of Commissioned's song "Who Do Men Say I Am?" are a reflection of Jesus' question to his disciples about their perception of him. The song starts with the question "who do men say I am?" which Jesus asked his disciples. The lyrics then explore the different answers the disciples gave, with some saying he could be Elijah or a prophet from on high. The song beautifully captures the curiosity and mystery that surrounded Jesus during his time on earth.
The song highlights the fact that despite Jesus being a well-known figure, there was still confusion about who he was among his disciples and the wider public. This is significant because it emphasizes the need for faith and understanding in order to truly know who Jesus is. The lyrics also show the importance of listening to the opinions of others and considering different perspectives when trying to understand complex issues.

who do men say i am?
jesus looked at his disciples
with loving eyes to see
to them who could he be
some say thou art elias
some are saying
a major prophet from on high
but with those same loving eyes he asked
whom say ye that i am?
this the son of man
truly thou art the christ
the son of god who reigns supreme
and lives above
and upon the rock
he built his church
and to peter he gave the key
through his blood all men
on earth could be set free
he told them much later
he had to die
this is why he came
and the reason why
he would explain
because of the price of adam’s sin
i’ll deliver my life to sinful man
the prophets have spoken concerning me
i do this through my love
i’ll redeem lost man with my blood
but if i be lifted up
i will draw all men to me
with my resurrection power
men will know throughout the land
the messiah from on high
is who i am
so it pleased the lord to bruise him
and we esteemed him smitten
of god and afflicted
by his stripes we’re healed
by his blood we’ll overcome

1JOHN 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we "keep" His commandments and His commandments are not grievous.
2 JOHN 1:6
and this love, that we "walk" after His commandments. This is the commandment, that as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
1 JOHN 2:3
and as a result, we do know that we know Him, if we "keep" His commandments.
1 JOHN 2:4
he that says, I know Him, and "keep not" His commandments, is a liar, and "The Truth" is not in him.
REVELATION 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the Lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
REVELATION 22:14
Blessed are they that "do" His commandments, that they may have right to the "Tree of Life," and enter in through the Gates into the City.
