Easy
Commodores (Richie Lionel) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Know it sounds funny
But, I just can't stand the pain
Girl, I'm leaving you tomorrow
Seems to me girl
You know I've done all I can
You see I begged, stole, and I borrowed! (yeah)

Ooh that's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning
That's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning!

Why in the world would anybody put chains on me?
I've paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be
What they want me to be
I'm not happy when I try to fake it! no!

Ooh that's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning
That's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning!

I wanna be high, so high
I wanna be free to know
The things I do are right
I wanna be free
Just me! Whoa, oh! Babe!

That's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning, yeah
That's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning, whoa
'Cause I'm easy
Easy like Sunday morning, yeah

'Cause I'm easy
Easy like Sunday morning

Overall Meaning

The song "Easy" by the Commodores, written by Lionel Richie, is a soulful ballad about a man who has had enough of a toxic relationship and decides to leave. The lyrics convey the singer's exhaustion with constantly trying to please his partner, but instead feeling like he can never measure up to their expectations. He laments about the pain he feels in the relationship and how he has tried everything to make it work but has failed. The line "I begged, stole, and I borrowed" highlights his desperation to make things right.

The chorus of the song is the most recognizable part as it repeats the phrase "I'm easy like Sunday morning." This could be interpreted as the singer's desire for a stress-free and carefree life, without the pressures of a difficult relationship. He no longer wants to be chained to someone else's expectations or forced to pretend to be someone he's not. The repetition of the phrase also adds to the song's overall melancholic tone, as if the singer is trying to convince himself that leaving is the right thing to do.

Overall, "Easy" is a song that speaks to the exhaustion that can come from trying to make a difficult relationship work. The lyrics, paired with Lionel Richie's soulful voice, make for a moving and relatable ballad.

I listened to this song every single day during my deployment to Iraq in 2004-2005. It was the only way to keep my sanity.

Hearing this takes me back to the 70's, watching my beautiful mom singing to this and cleaning the house. Every Saturday was cleaning day and she played the music loud all morning. I'm so grateful for all the beautiful music she exposed my brother and I to. Listening just takes me back and since they're both no longer in this world, it just reminds me of home and good memories.
