Overall Meaning

The song “Crossbow” by Common Market is a commentary on religion and its role in society. It opens with the singer interrupting the status quo, urging the listener to grab hold of the staff and take action. The elders speak of long winters, and the group seals the church closed, waiting for the storm to pass. They pray for non-believers, asking the Lord to grant them victory over Satan. One attendee challenges the notion that only a few are chosen, but the panel of religious leaders shuts him down by quoting scripture.

The song then takes a turn, attacking the hypocrisy of some religious leaders. The singer calls out a minister with “dirty garb” and a narrow-minded path for his followers. The last section of the song celebrates the “revolution” of faith, where people come together with a common bond of the “God Sound.” The singer calls for inclusivity and service, not conversion, and challenges the tendency of people to dodge spiritual questions.

Overall, “Crossbow” is a complex song that critiques religion’s role in society. It calls out hypocrisy and exclusivity while celebrating the power of faith to bring people together. The song encourages listeners to take charge of their own spirituality and reject the narrow paths laid out by some religious leaders.

@CrossSIdeTop

I don't think I've ever heard a lyricist whose lyrics, when read, are as eloquent as when spoken. I originally LOVED this song for the beat, simply because it was so densely worded as to be hard to follow. I knew the general idea, but never made it out to be a STORY (parable even) until I found the lyrics posted online. As a Progressive dude, this transcends music in my opinion.

@RawScion

yessir, from "no rest for the weary".

@SolBrutha

There is a synergy between these two guys that cannot be denied! I am patiently awaiting another album.

The knight was a sacrifice to let the pawn check

@p0ker1sc00l

I think the question is answered already, but the first sentence of the song "When the colonizer came with the cross and the sword" is from "no rest for the weary" by Blue Scholars right?
