Natural Competition
Conditions Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When we have our doubts, the weak are weeded out, it is natural selection
This action brings me to you, I've no clue how you stand here now
Has it failed somehow?
But now you're walking the Earth with your curse
You are inside out
Your color's coming under your skin
And you will glow a shade of yellow forever
Letting people know to never ever let you in
Your lack of speech makes me believe you were skipped by evolution
There are sounds we make that could set things straight, but you don't know how to use them
Afraid to open your mouth, it comes out in a clearer way than you ever could say
And now you're walking the Earth with your curse
Slowly fading away
And now you're tangled in a wicked web made of everything that you wish you never did
The song "Natural Competition" by Conditions talks about the inevitable struggle for survival that exists in the natural world. The lyrics are quite introspective, commenting on the way human beings tend to weed out the weak and underperforming individuals in our midst, and how this can lead to feelings of doubt and insecurity in those who are struggling to keep up. The first line of the song, "compete to survive, it's a way of life, it is natural competition", sets the tone for the rest of the song, emphasising the natural forces that push us to compete and succeed in life.
The second verse of the song focuses on the idea of natural selection, illustrating how only the strongest and most capable individuals tend to survive in a competitive world. The lines "your lack of speech makes me believe you were skipped by evolution / there are sounds we make that could set things straight, but you don't know how to use them" show how certain people are not as equipped with the necessary skills to survive in this kind of world. Interestingly, the song takes a somewhat dark turn towards the end, with the lines "and now you're tangled in a wicked web made of everything that you wish you never did", indicating that the singer may be struggling with his own demons and regrets, and may be feeling trapped in his current state of being.
Overall, "Natural Competition" is a song that explores some heavy themes around competition and self-worth, and may be particularly resonant for those who are struggling to keep up with the demands of modern life. However, the song also offers a glimmer of hope in its final moments, suggesting that even those who feel like they are cursed or damaged may eventually find a way to heal and move on.
