The group was founded by Paul Lemos, the group's only consistent member. Most of Controlled Bleeding's released recordings feature two main collaborators, Chris Moriarty and vocalist Joe Papa, who both died in the late 2000s.
Since their first full-length release in 1983, Controlled Bleeding have released over 30 albums spanning several different genres, many of which were released on notable independent labels. Their cross-genre approach combined with the out-of-print status of many of the group's releases is reminiscent of the work of other experimental and cross-genre groups of the 80s and 90s such as Coil and Swans. Nontheless, Controlled Bleeding's sound varies from album to album and at one time or another has contained elements of dub, free jazz, noise, prog rock, sacred music, dark ambient, classical and musique concrète.

Leaving just a memory
Snapshot in the family album
Daddy what else did you leave for me?
Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?
All in all it was just a brick in the wall
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall
The lyrics of Controlled Bleeding's version of Another Brick in the Wall Part 1&2 are a commentary on the psychological and emotional damage inflicted upon children by parental abandonment. The opening lines, "Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a memory," suggest the father in question has physically left the family, leaving only a photograph behind as a reminder of his absence. The repeated question, "Daddy what else did you leave for me?" highlights not just the emptiness left behind by his departure, but also the feeling of betrayal and abandonment that comes with it. The sorrowful tone of the lyrics is further emphasized by the repetition of the lines "All in all it was just a brick in the wall, all in all it was all just bricks in the wall," which suggest that the singer's personal pain and sense of loss are ultimately insignificant in the wider world.
