Converge have enjoyed a relatively high level of recognition. According to AllMusic, they are "regarded as one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground." Their popularity rose with the release of Jane Doe, which was ranked as the best album of 2001 by Terrorizer and later as the 61st Best Metal Album of All Time by Rolling Stone. Subsequently, Converge moved from Equal Vision Records to the considerably larger label Epitaph Records and their records gradually became more elaborate and expensive to produce. Special releases have traditionally been handled by Deathwish Inc., established by Bannon in 1999. The band's ninth studio album, The Dusk in Us, was released in November 2017 through Deathwish and Epitaph.
Losing Battle
Converge Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all it claims from me
As those years recede
White lies are all I see
Missed steps and misgivings
Driven by frailty
What you call family
Nothing left to lose
When I'm losing you
Losing the battle
And losing the war
The lyrics of Converge's song Losing Battle seem to be conveying a message of someone who has lost everything they had, including themselves. The opening line, "a triumph of tragedy," suggests a sense of irony, where even in the midst of despair, there can be a sense of victory. However, as the song progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the singer's triumph is more of a consolation prize, a silver lining to a dark cloud.
The imagery of "white lies" suggests that the singer is disillusioned with the world around them, calling into question the idea of truth, and laying bare the futility of trying to maintain appearances. The lines, "missed steps and misgivings, driven by frailty," seem to suggest that the singer is feeling increasingly vulnerable, wrestling with their own emotions and insecurities.
The chorus, "losing the battle, and losing the war," speaks to the singer's sense of futility and the feeling that there is nothing left to fight for. The repeated use of the word "losing" suggests that the singer is caught in a downward spiral, unable to stop the impending demise of what little they have left.
Overall, the lyrics of Losing Battle convey a sense of despair and hopelessness, driven by feelings of vulnerability and disillusionment.
