Blackbird
Cook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gee, but it's tough to be broke, kid.
It's not a joke, kid, it's a curse.
My luck is changing, it's gotten from
simply rotten to something worse
Who knows, some day I will win too.
I'll begin to reach my prime.

Now though I see what our end is,
All I can spend is just my time.

I can't give you anything but love, baby.
That's the only thing I've plenty of,baby.

Dream awhile, scheme awhile
We're sure to find

Happiness and I guess
All those things you've always pined for.

Gee I'd like to see you looking swell, baby.
Diamond bracelets Woolworth doesn't sell, baby.

Till that lucky day you know darned well, baby.
I can't give you anything but love.

Rome wasn't built in a day, kid.
You have to pay, kid, for what you get.
But I am willing to wait, dear,
Your little mate, dear, will not forget.

You have a lifetime before you.
I'll adore you, come what may.

Please don't be blue for the present,
When it's so pleasant to hear you say

I can't give you anything but love, baby.
That's the only thing I've plenty of,baby.

Dream awhile, scheme awhile
We're sure to find

Happiness and I guess
All those things you've always pined for.

Gee I'd like to see you looking swell, baby.
Diamond bracelets Woolworth doesn't sell, baby.

Till that lucky day you know darned well, baby.
I can't give you anything but love.

Overall Meaning

The song "Blackbird" by Cook is a beautiful and heartfelt portrayal of love in the face of financial struggles. The song's pleasing melody, brought to life by Cook's powerful voice, highlights the struggles of being broke while in love.

The first verse opens with the singer acknowledging the harsh reality of their financial situation. They lament that it's not a joke, but rather a curse to be broke. Even though their luck seems to be changing, it's not for the better. As the verse progresses, they express hope that one day they'll achieve success and reach their prime. However, for now, all they have to offer is their time.

The chorus, repeated twice in the song, is a beautiful and powerful testament to the love the singer has for their partner. They acknowledge that they can't provide fancy gifts or luxuries, but what they do have in abundance is love. They encourage their partner to dream and scheme for all the things they desire and are confident they will find happiness together someday.

The second verse is a reminder that Rome wasn't built in a day and the singer asks their partner to be patient as they wait for their fortunes to improve. They assure their partner of their devotion and love, which will not change regardless of their financial situation. They end the verse encouraging their partner to take pleasure in the present, which includes their love and the hope for a brighter future.

In conclusion, "Blackbird" by Cook is a beautiful love song that speaks to the power of love, even in the face of difficult circumstances such as being broke. The song encourages the listener to focus on the love they have rather than worrying about their financial situation.
